So the Kentucky Derby inspired two attempts at new combinations, one good and one dubious. The first was a mint julep (small handful of fresh mint muddled with a splash of water and 1-2 tsp of sugar, fill with crushed ice, add 2-3 oz bourbon) except with the bourbon replaced with a 1:2 mix of Segarra and water -- very tasty! The second was sort of a mint Sazerac julep, rye and a little absinthe over the julep setup. I was too lazy to get out the bitters, and maybe that's why it was uninspiring. But adding fresh mint w/ the usual sugar and water seems like a good thing. I wonder if other fresh herbs (lemon balm? fennel greens?) would work well too. |
