Of course, Congress says weed can't be used medically because it's a gateway drug. Morphine, cocaine and methamphetamine, they're all OK for medical use, but not pot...

I used to smoke weed alot about 3 years ago,and I stopped. I dont believe it is a gateway drug. If you get into drugs having the mindset I'll try anything once then yes maybe it is. I never had the interest to do any hard drugs. Seemed to me at the time like a waste and I really didnt want any part of it. I liked to smoke weed, but I grew so tired of feeling like a burnout and of being tired all the time that I just quit. Eventually I weened myself off of it. I do feel alot better since I've stopped, but I do miss the feeling it gives while you are listening or playing music.

Hopefully he'll discover on his own how important moderation is. Already he is feeling the effects of his choice by the fact that I am in no hurry whatsoever now to work on getting his driver's license.

And here I am on my second glass of Deva.

As he "matures" and gets out into the real world, he will find questions such as.. "do I pay the rent or buy dope?" hopefully he will have learned that paying the rent comes first..that's where responsinble kicks in..

Lets not forget that humanity has been using drugs in some shape or form since before they started keep track of time.My father died from drug abuse{prescription drugs}.. To me the drugs to worry about are the ones that grab you by the neck and wont let you go.Humans are very complicated creatures, you just got to hope for the best.

The main problem with being unserstanding about you kid smoking pot is that we are in the midst of a paranoid obsessive drug war. Smoking pot may be harmless, but mandatory sentancing laws aren't. Neither are the cops who bust in and sieze all your assets because they decide your kid is a drug dealer.

Cheri -

I have little doubt that it would be of value to discuss the whole moderation thing with the boy, aside from making sure he knows you don't approve of him using the stuff.

Forewarned is forearmed, they say. As long as he knows the truth about various drugs (which you may wish to get from a drug/addiction counselor, not that wacky anti-absinthe website), he will hopefully make healthy decisions. It's the same approach I was taught when I worked for the Southern AZ AIDS Foundation doing HIV prevention outreach . . . tell them the risks of various activities, give them the tools to protect themselves, and empower them to make their own decisions. We can't babysit forever, and it's of more value in the long run to teach people to make healthy, informed decisions than to try to enforce a set of absolute rules.

I always suspected that the "reefer madness" approach backfires; people tell kids that pot is a "gateway drug" and horribly addictive; however, as any drug counselor will tell you, marijuana is not physically addictive, and many users do not continue on to "hard drugs."

Unfortunately, kids hear the "it's horrible, it's addictive, it will ruin your life" message. They try it. It's not horrible. It's not addictive. It doesn't ruin their lives.

Gee, maybe crack isn't so bad, either. They lied about pot, right? (. . . and there's the "gateway!")

One bit of misinformation discredits the source.

I thought I liked the smell too, until I moved out of the house of a girlfriend who smoked it everyday for 8 years.

I, and she, had mistakenly assumed that I would, at a moments notice, take naps on the couch. Watching a movie? out. in the middle of entertaining? out. hangin' out on saturday afternoon? out.

I spent 8 years asleep on the couch. Not realizing it was her pot smoking that was knocking me out. hehee.

Using pot is like using alcohol. Too much is bad. A little bit from time to time is just fun.

I never smoked pot (well, only had 2-3 pof) but I`m always happy when someone does because I like the smell ;-).

moderation is the key for everything.

I confess that it`s sometime difficult with alcohol...

Cheri, your son will just find some more but won`t let you know next time... I understand that you did what you think is the best for him but... good luck.

I don't believe there's anything wrong with using pot. It's just how responsible you are with it's use.

My brother was a stoner in high school. I was an occasional user (also known as whenever you can get it free user). He is now on disability, an alcoholic, unemployed, divorced and lives in my mother's basement. I am now just absinthe drinking divorced vampire with cross dressing boyfriend.

I smoked alot of pot as a teenager. As an adult, I've owned a half a dozen successful businesses.
I presently own 3 houses. Pot didn't fuck up my life. Alcohol, on the other hand, has taken its toll on my body.

Simple, Gob, young kids are not typically believed to be equipped -- physiologically or emotionally -- to deal successfully with drugs. They lack that "enough is enough" programming that us adults (usually) develop.

Speaking anecdotally (I haven't done a formal study, and don't claim to be reading one, so please don't attack my lack of empirical research!), every pothead I know who was a pothead in high school grew up to be pretty much a loser.

Every pothead I know who started smoking frequently as an adult has a real career . . . one manages a retail clothing store, one is an architect, another is art director of a high-end magazine, yet another is a civil engineer . . .

They all know when to sober up and get some work done, and don't have the psychological addiction that the "losers" developed for marijuana.

Back to the website -- Not drive for four or five days after smoking? Are these people INSANE? Try two hours.

I did notice that their rant on absinthe was focused on the alcohol content; part of educating them should probably include the fact that it's typically DILUTED.

Of course, nobody will believe anything they have to say after tasting any brand of absinthe that isn't Hill's or Nasty Sebor Strong, since I haven't seen anything saying that any OTHER brand tastes remotely like cough syrup. One lie or bit of misinformation usually discredits the source entirely.

And yes, poppers can cause a "skin condition" around the nose . . . were these webpeople sufficiently educated, they'd realize that overuse of amyl nitrate causes CHEMICAL BURNS, usually accompanied by a bloody nose. (ow.) Of course, using amyl with Viagra is considered VERY dangerous.

The first time I smoked pot was at 15.

I walked in on my daughter while she was tripping on acid. She was 16. I waited till her trip was over before talking to her. I didn't want to bum her out during the trip. After listening to her describe her experience on acid, it was good, I just gave her the best advice I could. Which was: be sure of the quality of the acid, and take it in a secure setting with people you trust. If she was going to take acid, and I knew I couldn't stop her, I wanted to make sure that she was careful in how she took it. Given that I had some experience with psychedelics, I did the best I could do, I gave some advice. She took 2 or 3 more trips and that was it. She's 28 now. She doesn't do drugs, not even pot.

cheri,
good luck. I sympathize.

Cheri,

You are a real hard bitch. Why not just relax and skin up a joint or two with him. What harm can it do? A damn site less than absinthe or any other type of booze that's for sure.

I just caught my son with pot. Now I know there's worse things going on in the world and I would be a lot less pissed with him if he were more responsible with his grades and life in general.. (and damn did it hurt to flush that stuff down the john when you really wanted to just sneak off with it yourself).. but the gist of it all is.. I have bottles of absinthe sitting in the kitchen. I don't hide the fact that I drink it. It's bullshit like the website I mentioned below that kids read and say crap like, "BUT MOOOOOOOOOM, you do DRUGS TOO! Like that ABSINTHE!" gRRRRRggrrrrgrrrrrr

Quote:

ABSINTHE: An alcoholic drink for sale in Britain, is so strong it can send people mad and is also available on the Internet through a British firm, amid fears that it could be purchased by children. It is currently sold in trendy bars and coffee houses in Spain, Portugal and the Czech Republic as well as those in the UK.

The Government is being urged to put a ban on 140 per cent proof ‘Absinthe’ which has hallucinogenic effects and is said to have been responsible for much outrageous behaviour including Vincent van Gogh cutting off his ear. It is a drink frequently linked historically to writers and the arts, and is retailed legally in parts of Europe.

The French outlawed it after discovering that half of the people in it's asylums were there because of the side-effects, which also include epilepsy and baldness. Absinthe can knock people for six in a way no other drink can.

The hallucinogenic drink, said to taste like cough medicine, was banned in France in 1915. It is also banned in Switzerland, where it was invented in the eighteenth century.

Absinthe - made by soaking wormwood bark in alcohol - became popular in France in the last century, but by 1912 doctors were so concerned they lobbied for a ban on the grounds that it was 246 times more powerful than beer. Wormwood is a woody shrub and was once grown prolifically on the site of the present Wormwood Scrubs Prison, which bears it's name.
