This whichwhatnow? I hate to break it to you, but us Lefties want to give healthcare to EVERYBODY, regardless of what they smoke.

Cheap cigars? My favorite day-to-day smokes are JR's Honduras Specials and Consuegras (Villazon seconds).

My mom had Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disorder. So does her sister. My mom smoked for 40 years. Her sister didn't. I have no doubt that my mom's lungs are worse than they would have been if she hadn't smoked, but I'm also fairly sure she'd have had SOME major lung problems by now regardless. Since it is impossible at this point to determine exactly to what degree her health problems are self-inflicted, I'd call it pretty damn beastly to judge if she "deserves" health care.

Nolamour,

You mention some great cigars. I love cigars too. Have you ever tried to find a great cheap cigar? Around two or three bucks each? Now that's a challenge, but there are some good ones out there. What's your favorite cheap cigar?

Here's some I like to smoke, if you have favorite cheapy, Id love to hear about it.

I still have a right to be pissed off about it and ask where the personal responsibility is, don't I?

But, like Vera, I'm more pissed about those "I smoked a joint and funded terrorists today" ads . . . and ran across this just today!

Enjoy!

Traineraz,

The whole paying for smoker's healthcare is a straw dog. It's silly to add up the costs of healthcare at the end of a smokers life and say it is because of cigaretts. Healthcare is an expensive proposition for any lingering illness smoking or not. Do you count the savings incurred when a smoker dies instantly of a heart attack or stroke? Do you compare that to someone dying of liver cancer? It's silly to say that smoker's cause their own death. They were going to die anyway, and it was going to be expensive anyway.

Arrrggg spit spit...

The key to understanding the Truth ads is that their funding comes from the tobacco lawsuits, ie, from the tobacco companies. They don't want the ads to be effective. They want them to seem dorky and kinda off, so that kids will want to rebel against them.

Because smoking actually is cool.

I am an x-smoker...As I am now able to get up in the morning without dropping a lung out of my throat, it's better. Although, I MISS THE CRAP OUT OF MY MARLBORO'S - I WANT A RED RIGHT NOW! Smoke em if you got em...Just don't smoke em when your pregnant or around my child!

A Cohiba, Macanudo, Nat Sherman, Zino, Romeo Y Julietta, or, my personal favorite, El Incomparable!!! - Once every 2 to 3 months...With a good glass of the Verte. It can't be beat!

Yeah, and fuck all those people who eat hamburgers and pizza, too. And people who drive small cars, don't buckle up, or have multiple sexual partners. Anybody who doesn't live the healthiest lifestyle possible should be exempt from recieving any medical care...

You want to know why you should pay to treat people who suffer illnesses because of smoking? Because they're human beings. And, while chosing to smoke may be a simple choice, chosing to quit can be an ordeal beyond many people's ability.

We all have to make our own decisions about what risks we are willing to take, and what the benefits are. And yes, some of those decisions have indirect effects on others. If you don't like the fact that decisions made by others may impact you, you might want to consider living on an island.

What pisses ME off is that my tax dollars are being spent (Medicare/Medicaid) to treat people with emphesyma, lung cancer, mouth cancer, throat cancer, and bladder cancer caused by smoking.

If people want to destroy their own health, I agree wholeheartedly that it's their business; but they should do it on their OWN dime, not mine. Why should I (or the rest of us) be responsible for paying to treat them for intentionally self-inflicted illness? There aren't too many people in this country who can't read the warnings on the side of the pack. Where's the personal responsibility??

Smoking in cars? Driver/owner's decision, definitely. Couldn't agree more. If you don't like it, ride with someone else or open the window. Smoking outside? Not a big issue there, either. May not be pleasant, but it's much less concentrated than indoors. As long as people aren't claiming they have a right to blow the crap in MY face in an enclosed space (or the faces of people with asthma or sensitivity to smoke), it's their business.

I'd guess those "Truth" ads look like they're shot by college-age activists because their target audience is likely teenagers, in high school or starting college, not us "sophisticated grownup" types.

I remember a poster they used to have on the subways in NYC. Marc might remember it. It had a drawing of a grotesque, hacking woman, with the caption of "Virginia Slime: You've gone the wrong way, baby!" I should have snagged one! :)

By the way, I DO have an occasional cigar (once a month or so). I only smoke at home, at the home of a friend who also smokes cigars, or outdoors. I would consider anything else to be rude.

It seems odd that a government that has so much vested interests tied up in the tobacco industry should try so eagerly to stop it's citizens from smoking. On the other hand it'll do it's best to support and help the tobacco giants create more smokers in developing nations.

It's the whole propaganda thing that really pisses me off, and frightens me as well.

It's frightening how well it seems to work sometimes. There are actually people who run around trying to ban outdoor smoking, or smoking in cars. I can see a day when every vagina will be outfitted with a smoke detector in case someone decides to smoke after sex.

Even worse, once they finish with the cigarretts, it'll be alcohol and firearms. The two of the three that I actually like. Then I'll be really pissed. (also drunk and armed)

Teen smoking, well smoking in general, in the eyes of the 'powers that be', has progressively gotten "worse" every year even as the anti-smoking ads make their rounds in commercial breaks. Same with the *ahem* drug "problem". I just think it's a waste of time, and (our) money. People want to do things to their bodies, fuck off, let them, it's their bodies. Oh Well, I am a non smoker as well, but the anti smoking commercials and those cheesy billboards (butt-head) that line every highway just dig at me.

I like the "brain on drugs" one where
the chick takes the pan and smashes her
representational family.

Ends up with a horrible mess in the kitchen.

Now on that, we agree totally. That's just about the most irritating thing on television. I'd LOVE it if when they're trying to mail the "hazardous material" (cigarettes), an overreacting hell bent for terrorist goon squad would rush in and kick the dogshit out of them and haul them off to the pokey.

Those damn *Truth* ads on TV.

They look like they were produced by a bunch little know it all college fucks. They are trying to save us from ourselves by telling us how bad the tobacco industry is.

Now never mind that everyone on this earth is going to die someday. Forget about personal responsibility and freedom. These stupid fucks are trying to show us how smart and enlightened they are by putting a bunch of little plastic baby dolls in the street. Did you see the people pick up the dolls and read the message underneath. When they do, they get a little "*" on their heads, like now they get it! Now we have transformed this person from a brainless dolt to someone who knows, and they will continue to spread this enlightenment throughout the country.

The actually believe they have a pearl of wisdom that we have all been missing for the past 50 years. Damn I hate those elitist bastards!

You wanna know what's worse? It's the fact that this is how our glorious leaders decided to spend their tobacco settlement.
What the hell?
The nicotine patches are just as expensive as they ever were. So these stupid commercials are going to stop smoking? Give me a fucking break.

It all makes me think about what it must have been like at the turn of the century when they banned absinthe and alcohol in general. There must have been a bunch of little panty waste fucks like this bunch who went around to churches and declared their piety by casting blame on every poor bastard who ever took a drink.

All this from a guy who doesn't even smoke. (except for the occasional cannabis now and then)
