Particularly in the Monkey hole.

Anyway in the UK the Home Secretary gave approval for the status of Cannabis to be downgraded from a Class B to Class C drug. This puts possession of cannabis on the same lines as possession of valium without a prescription. The idea is to free up police time to concentrate on more serious offences, even a minor arrest for possession of cannabis results in 6 hours admin and paperwork for the police.

In reality what it means is that if you're walking down the street openly smoking a spliff and a policeman stops you and asks you to put it out and you do as he says you'll either be told to be on your way (or if the policeman is in a particularly bad mood you'll recieve a caution, have your gear taken off you and then be told to be on your way). If you're stupid and refuse to put your spliff out whne told to then the police will of course arrest you take you down to the station etc. etc., you end up with a £50 ine and the police end up with 6 hours paperwork.

The important thing about this move is that for once the government is recognising that (while still technically illegal) cannabis is nowhere near as harmful to a person as speed, e's, etc. and is not even in a league close to Heroin or Cocaine. Schools, drugs councillors etc can now openly educate people about the dangers of drugs in a way that is credible, rather than having to say to kids (who know better anyway) that "All 'drugs', including cannabis, are very dangerous and will cause you great harm". Now the issue can be discussed openly and sensibly.

Marijuana? He's talking about MARIJUANA??

Silly me, here I thought a posting on the absinthe forum about decriminalizing something or other would either be somehow relevant to absinthe, or at least say otherwise.

Er, hate to break up the party, but (10th amendment be damned) that would in no way invalidate the FEDERAL laws prohibiting posession.

So . . . um . . . you can legally possess three ounces of absinthe? That's not much.

I saw on CNN today that possession of less than 3OZ would not be a crime if a new bill passes. If passed it will be on the books in 2004. It may be time to start looking for real estate around Lake Meade!
