You bet! That Germs performance is seared in my memory. I didn't realize til later, when I gave them a serious listen, what an incredible lyricist Darby Crash was.

Does anyone even remember the punkumentary film "The Decline of Western Civilization", by Penelope Spheeris? It played the L.A. midnight movie circuit for years ... sort of replaced "The Rocky Horror Picture Show".

DOA, or part of it anyway, is on the Special Edition DVD of Sid and Nancy. The interview with S&N is hillarious and really sad all at once. You tend to forget how YOUNG Sid was, and seeing a kid so fucked up he can't stay conscious is kinda awful.

Nancy, on the other hand, was so annoying I'd have frickin' stabbed her myself...

I adored SLC Punk. It paralleled my youth to an eerie extent. I KNEW those people. You can argue all day about whether it's "punk" or not, but it was certainly an accurate portrayal of a subculture.

The DOA is on VHS and I own a copy of it. The interview with Sid, or should I say Nancy isnt that long. Sid was asleep, or high as a kite when the interview took place. Interesting little film though.

When I say "legit" I just mean an official, sanctioned product -- not a bootleg. The Rhino "Punk" video is old, probably out-of-print. It's all live concert footage from various sources, but professionally shot.

I just saw SLC PUNK for the first time two weeks ago. Sux.

Yes Pata...I have seen 3 of which you've mentioned.

Although, I don't know about the "Punk" titled by Rhino. Glad to hear legit...I've seen wanna-be punk movies in the past and I can't stand Hollywood induced portrayals.

What was that trash called "Real Punk" or SLC Punk something with the guy from "Scream"...it was terrible and whoever wrote/produced it should be ashamed. (They have no clue)

But much easier to find are these highly recommended legit movies:

WESTWAY TO THE WORLD - The Clash
RUDE BOY - The Clash
THE FILTH AND THE FURY - Sex Pistols
THE GREAT ROCK'N'ROLL SWINDLE - Sex Pistols
THE PUNK ROCK MOVIE - 1976 Anarchy Tour, etc, etc.

There are some good bootleg and "grey market" videos of the Sex Pistols around, various compilations and tapes of full shows like Norway 1977 and the Dallas 1978 show, which are quite good. You should be able to find them at a local record convention.

And there's a legit video by Rhino called "Punk" that is superb, just lots of individual live cuts of early bands. The Clash sequences are just eye-scoarching.

Wow Beta...

Thanks Pata, I'm going to look for it on the shelves or even in a catalog I have.
The documentary looked pretty wild, so, I hope the movie is too. Might be good for my collection.

I don't recall "Blank Generation", but I remember "D.O.A." which has clandestine shots of the Pistols U.S. tour and an infamous interview with Sid and Nancy. I don't know if it ever came out on DVD or even VHS for that matter. I did see an old Beta videotape of it and I was tempted to buy it and find some way to convert it to VHS. But I didn't and I shoulda.

Others on the bill...Blink 182?????

C'mon...they don't even come close to that genre.
What a load of crap. There are PLENTY of other fantastic punk bands that could have been on the bill...I guess money was more important.

...I'd still like to know more about the movies...

Hey, I don't intend to belabor the Punk issue, I just have a question:

Has anyone seen the movies "The Blank Generation" - American made documentary about CBGB bands. Or "D.O.A" (not the Denis Quaid film) - British made mostly about Sex Pistols? Called cult classics.
I just saw a 70's documentary and these two movies were said to depict the British and American styles of Punk. I wonder if they are worth renting or buying...if I can find them.

no, Pata. I'm saying that The Sex Pistols did not, in hob's words, lead the way.
There were many before and there will be many after.
