Nice article that ran in BBC History Magazine on the Gin Acts of the mid 18th century. Author draws several valid correlations between the gin laws, early 20th century american prohibition and the modern war on drugs.

But from our perspective and the late 19th & early 20th century prohibition movements in Europe it is also interesting... and I know we've brought it up before.
