I just saw "Masked and Anonymous". Folks, this is the "Citizen Kane" of BOB movies. This is a work of undiluted genius. Anyone who doesn't see that is an absolute goddam idiot.

. . . and whatever happened to that bit about Michael Jackson playing Edgar Allen Poe as a redneck bronc-buster with 13 toes?

"The Hannibal franchise is running out of steam."

The mere fact that Hollywood is pimping this story for a second trick speaks for itself.

It looks like RED DRAGON is on its way to grossing
around $35 million for its opening weekend. Good but not great. The Hannibal franchise is running out of steam.

Interesting choice of music in the the newest "Two Towers" trailer released today.

SPOILER

They decided to use the score from "Requiem for a Dream" as part of the sound mix. Does this mean that the ending will be especially dark, and is that Aragorn walking through the Hall of the Dead at the end?

That cast of "Masked and Anonymous" is phenomenal. Hope it doesn't spoil the outcome.

One of the Reader's Critics Choices for this week is a 2001 Spanish film called MAD LOVE. While that film sounds like a must-see, I want to draw attention to another MAD LOVE that is playing one-time only at the LaSalle Theatre this Saturday night (and should be available on video to others). It' a 1935 remake of the silent film THE HANDS OF ORLAC directed by Karl Freund, who photographed METROPOLIS and other classic films. Peter Lorre (in his first American role) is a mad scientist who grafts the hands of a psycho to a crippled concert pianist. It's worth checking out for this rare large-screen presentation.

Jennifer, my lovely wife, is Joan Allen's stand-in
for a movie that is shooting here in Taos, OUT OF THE WAY. Its being directed by Campbell Scott and stars Allen and Sam Elliot. Jennifer spent some social time with Elliot last night and says he's the nicest dude in the world. No horseshit Hollywood attitude. He introduced himself to Jennifer by saying
" hello sweetheart, my name's Sam, what's yours?" His wife, Katherine Ross, is the real deal too.

Dylan looks like a skinny Warren Oates in that picture.

Ha ha! Most people took it as a hoax when word spread a few months ago. Now filming is complete, including a public concert by Dylan that was filmed in LA. The script appeared on the internet, from a seemingly legit source, but it was so completely bizarre that there was some skepticism. But, hey, this is Bob Dylan and the writer for Seinfield. Either it's legit or it's the most elaborate film hoax ever.

Check the preponderance of evidence:

MASKED AND ANONYMOUS coming in 2003
Starring: Bob Dylan
Director: Larry Charles (of "Seinfeld" and "Curb Your Enthusiasm")
written by Rene Fontaine and Sergy Petrov (purported to be Dylan and Charles)

cast includes: Penelope Cruz, Ed Harris, Jeff Bridges, John Goodman, Giovanni Ribisi, Jessica Lange, Val Kilmer, Luke Wilson, Mickey Rourke, Christian Slater and Angela Bassett.

"A fablelike musical drama, 'Masked and Anonymous' is set in a nameless country wracked by an endless and senseless civil war in which everyone has forgotten what they are fighting about. Dylan plays Jack Fate, a washed-up singer wrestling with his personal demons on the eve of his final benefit concert, a massive event intended to revive his career and bring peace."

Director Charles says: "Bob is like a post-apocalyptic Humphrey Bogart in this movie."
