But seriously... try Liqueurs de France. They ship by private courier, so the post will not be a problem. I live in a downscale neighborhood in a minor U.S. metropolis, and last time I ordered it came in 2 days, repeat, TWO DAYS.

The Emile Blanche is probably their best absinthe.

So revolting, it's on the brink of decapitating itself and declaring the "Republique d'Absinthe".

Don't do that. Thujone is irrelevent, and simply adding wormwood will make the absithe taste awful. Absinthe must be distilled to remove the bitterness of the wormwood.

Take a look at the FAQ and the articles linked on the left of the screen (particularly "Separating Myth from Reality"). The only product claiming to be absinthe that leaves herbs in the bottle is "Absinth King", which is, I am told, revolting.

Hi, I'm a new poster here as well, from Melbourne, Australia. I became interested in absinthe not that long ago. I looked on this web site and went out and bought from my local liquor storethe pastis's, I think they're called.
Riccard and Pernod. I recommend Riccard, which has a taste like licorice rather than anise, in my opinion.
I've tried the Pernod 68 absinthe. You can buy absinthe in a liquor shop right next to Young and Jackson's in the city. I've talked to the people there saying that the ones they have may not be the best ones, and asking them to get Emile and others. They say that they get what they can, and also one guy said something about Australian laws and thujone levels. I would reckon that this isn't relevant because of the laws in Europe already restricting these levels.
I'm interested in other Australian's efforts to buy absinthe by mail order from overseas, if it can be done.
Anyway, the green fairy in Moulin Rouge (Kylie Minogue) is from Melbourne so I guess that means something.
I have tried adding wormwood to the absinthe to increase the thujone levels. I will post on this elsewhere here. I have never read of anyone doing this, but some absinthe brands (I gather)leave wormwood or some herbs in them, contributing to a darker green colour and bitterness.
So hello to like minded people here.
regards,
zent

Actually you can buy Absinthe in AU. It is legal to have, you can't mail it however. I know for a fact the Ultimo Wine Shop in Sydney has La Fee (124 I believe).

But that leads me to my question, I'm not an Aussie but another NYer. I'm going to Sydney this August, and I want to bring a bottle back.

If I do will I get in trouble? Do I declare it? I think the limit is 2 bottles.

Thanks in advance.

''Is it a hard or big task distilling Absinthe?''

If your question is about distilling premium quality absinthe, yes it is. Otherwise there would be many business selling premium absinthe. So far there is a lot less than many...

Hi Mattm3 - it's fairly draconian re distillation laws - I'd say fairly similar to NZ. Is it a hard or big task distilling Absinthe?

Hi LL - thanks for the backhanded welcome. Unfortunately VB is the only alcohol I am consuming but the cups of O tea keep me sane. Haven't had absinthe since I was in Spain 2 yrs ago. It's along time between drinks. I'll try to pretend I'm in Absinthe town but may need a few cups of tea to get me there.

Hey JackShpit, welcome to the fun. Are the laws in Australia the same as New Zealand in regards to distillation?

Welcome JackShpit,

I live in Pennsylvania, which sometimes seems like Australia, except not at all. But, welcome anyway. Maybe you can pretend you are here in Absinthetown, Pa. Then quality absinthe is very easy to acquire.
Then, while we are both pretending we are where the other one is, something magical may occur.
Like a wake up call.
Enjoy your VB whilst I'm sipping coffee on the opposite side of the world in "my" morning.
Will work for absinthe.
