Are the mini bottles at BevMo now discontinued? That was how I tried both the green and the yellow. Didn't care for either, but at least I wasn't out too much money.

Now, Drambuie, ahhhh...

i drink the green straight as well
yellow i like just over ice

yes, they had a bottle of cuvee green and yellow at the very top shelf of the bar, and i can't remember the price listed in the drink list, but it was only like 8 or 10 bucks for a glass.

at bevmo, the fifth of regular yellow sometimes is on sale for under $20

Chartreuse is so good they named a color after it. I drink it mixed with club soda. I always thought it tasted a bit like catnip. Is there any catnip in it?

If anyone wants to try some, just order a mini from SC for $2. They have both green and yellow.

Where can you get yellow chartreuse for $20???? for a 0.7 liter bottle?

I take it neat in a grappa glass, after dinner of course.
Emmy, is it the special cuvée stuff that have at Absinthe?

Mine was green. The yellow was only 20 bucks. There was a $100+ bottle on the shelf also. Glad I didnt go for that.

So anybody have any drink recipes for this stuff. I heard something about mixing it with tonic or soda water. Sounds like a mint julup. I was thinking in might be good while shushing in the Sierra's - either straight from a bota or in hot chocolate or cofee.

I bought a bottle of Green out of curiosity, and every single time I drank any amount, even one glass, I got pain in my melon right smack in the middle that felt like a rusty drill bit twistin' it's way through.
It's the only booze that's given me that. Something in there doesn't agree w/my spongy mass.
Will work for absinthe.

What an appropriate post...

I've been looking at the Green and Yellow at my local liquor store for 3 weeks now and I've really wanted to try the Green. I went on the web... read what they had to say and checked through some books and read that, but nowhere have I read what it really tastes like.

How do you prepare it, or rather what's the most palatable method?

$40.00 isn't bad... $130.00 for fake Chartreuse / Oxygenee is!

You have to be intriqued by a drink formulated in the mid 1600's!

Guess this could be interesting for Chartreuse lovers. It's really wicked:

I bought a bottle in Italy a while ago - a very nice Digestif!

on the subject of herbal liquers... i've been having bouts of insomnia lately... not to mention i haven't been eating much (had a salad today... which was first thing i'd eaten since chinese deli and a bowl of tuna on sunday)... so here i am 2 in the morn... and i decided to try curing my insomnia with a lesser version of james hetfield's old throat coater (he drank warm milk with gin and jagermeister in it before gigs)...

and i must say that warm milk with jagermeister is really quite fucking tasty!

when i was working at bevmo, they discontinued carrying the special chartreuse... i kept watching it go down and finally snatched up the bottle of green and the bottle of yellow that we had in the store (i hid them away and waited as the price dropped each month so no one would buy them ha!)

unfortunately... a couple good friends of ours (was still with mel at the time) got engaged and they were big big chartreuse heads... needless to say, they have two very nice gifts...

:::bonks himself over the head:::

oh, spoony, if you wanna try it, Absinthe has some at the bar for a very reasonable price! (at least it was last time i was there)

Chartreuse is very good. I bought a small bottle of the green, and no one understood how I was able to drink it straight, let alone at all.

Its just good stuff.

I think genepi is one of the predominant flavors in chartreuse. Straight genepi liqueur reminds me a lot of chartreuse.

There are a lot of nice things in Chartreuse,

Angelica root and seed, melissa, hyssop, spearmint, nutmeg, clove, cinnamon, pepper, orange peel, calamus, ...

and a big amount of:

Oh, you said 40 dollar. That is NOT the "expensive version". Look for the special cuvée in the wooden box! (I haven't tried it.)

I love Chartreuse. It's ironic that it was invented by monks. Drink enough of that stuff, and you will know that whether or not there's a god, there is certainly a devil.

mmmmm..... chartreuse..... Did you really buy the $180 special cuvée stuff?????

I love chartreuse. but it can give a wicked hangover. I think Petermarc said one of the herbs (angelica?) gives the urge to projectile vomit from your nose.

i love chartreuse... you might like the yellow, but the green is certainly not for the uninitiated. as for the purpose, there's plenty of info on the web, and it shares much in common as far as origin with other herbal liquors.

Well I finally got burned bad. I have been having a pretty good run lately. Everthing that I have been trying has been really good. Un Emile 68, Capmari, Pernod, even that cheapo bottle of anisette that I got wasnt that bad (after a little wormwood infusion added). I have been trying a lot of herbal flavored drinks lately, but that Chartruse. What the hell is purpose of that stuff? Never being afraid to jump in with both feet, of course I had to buy the expensive version to boot.

I think I am going to go puke now.
