/paranoid rant Yes indeedy. And with the definition of 'enemy combatant' no longer meaning 'soldier' but 'guy who doesn't like us, we think'... Step one: Anti government movement of any flavor in the US. Step two: An act of terrorism attributable to same. Step three: Don't say anything interpretable as anti government, or you will end up with your uncle Bob in the secret pokey awaiting a 'trial.' This will be good for America, because there will be a population of hardworking Americans that can't quit and don't get paid, thus bringing corporations to repatriate their businesses and stop sending jobs away. But it will be OK, because they won't be *called* gulags. Let's call em Freedom Camps! Or maybe 'Patriotism Centers.! Yeah, I like that one. For truly, isn't any violent criminal act commited on American soil terrorism?

Um, if we think somebody's al-Qa`ida, that's exactly what they'll get. Or, at least, imprisonment at Guantonomo until we get around to hold secret military tribunals to decide if they are guilty, and then more imprisonment. A secret trial with no representation is pretty much the same as no trial at all. |

There are similarites with Northern Ireland in the early stages. The Catholic population of Northern Ireland welcomed the British soldiers in as protectors when they first arrived (waved and cheered, gave them flowers, made them cups of tea, had photos taken with them etc). The Republican paramilitaries thought differently and started killing soldiers. The mood of the Catholic population changed dramatically once the army shot some Catholic civilians and ransacked Catholic houses looking for Republican paramilitaries. Then there was the shooting of unarmed demonstrators at marches etc. All that needs to happen now is for the coalition troops to introduce imprisonment without trial for terrorist suspects, in Iraq. A tiny place like Northern Ireland with only a few hundred IRA terrorists kept the British troops (30,000 at one stage) tied up there for many decades. The points Blackjack make are very valid plus you have the fact that Northern Ireland has a population of only 1.7 million whereas Iraq has a population of 22.2 million. In messy urban guerrila warfare, superior military might does not give an occupying army much of an advantage. Leave Iraq to the Shi'ites. Trying to solve the problem by trying to instigate a pluralist, pro-Western democracy is futile. I wonder will the 'right to bear arms' be in the Iraqi constitution being knocked out by those friendly Iraqis chosen by the coalition to draft it (under Western 'guidance' of course). |

This is going to be much messier than Northern Ireland. At least there you've got a majority that considers itself loyal subjects of the occupying power. In Iraq, I'd say the breakdown is: 35%: "Thanks for overthrowing that evil guy. Do you have any food?" 30% "Thanks for overthrowing that evil guy. Now get the fuck out." 10% "Hey, I LIKED that evil guy." 15% "Die uncircumcised western infidel dog!" |

Luckily we've got our friends the New Europeans to take our place there. In for a penny, in for a euro! Come on in and make Iraq safe for Halliburton and maybe Skoda and Hravatska Telekom get a few crumbs too. Hooray that Saddam is gone (-ish) but the war still wasn't worth one Pomeranian grenadier. |
