"Fortified with a good rest, a steam bath and a sirloin steak, and armed with throat lozenges and malted milk tablets, [he] talked against a civil rights bill for 24 hours and 18 minutes - longer than anyone has ever talked about anything in Congress ... 'At times he spoke so quietly that he appeared to be mumbling to himself.' "He left the chamber at 9:12 p.m. [His assistant] waited in the cloakroom with a pail in case [he] was in dire need of a toilet." A perverse 1957 remake of MR. SMITH GOES TO WASHINGTON? No ... just Strom. |

But at least we got rid of Strom. For some reason, I keep picturing Kate at the Pearly Gates saying, "Thurmond, you hateful old coot, stop holding up the line! You're not getting in." |

http://sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2003/06/30/MN168097.DTL For the first time ever I burst into tears at a celebrity passing, right in front of a newstand this morning. I loved Katharine Hepburn more than anything. She gave feminity spunk & a sort of charming churlishness. I adore her. Aaaaaah! “A lady who has a secure seat is never prettier than when in the saddle, and she who cannot make her conquest there, may despair of the power of her charms elsewhere.” - THE MANNERS THAT WIN, 1880 http://www.feeverte.net |
