I first saw GWAR at a skate ramp out in the wilds of Northern Virginia. They were performing on one side of the half-pipe, while my friends and I stood on the other, occasionally tossing pumpkin guts down into the (literal) pit below, to mix with the fake blood and jizz, and real sweat and dog shit (somebody brought their dog...) to create a nearly frictionless surface more conducive to silent-film slapstick than proper moshing. I remember a few years back, the city that spawned GWAR, Richmond, VA, refused to let Marilyn Manson play, because they said he violated community standards. Ahem... |

Aw yeah. I saw tons of shows there. Since they served french fries you could get in if you were under age. I saw, hrm... Oingo Boingo Gwar Lene Lovich Shriekback Gene Loves Jezebel Translator The Ophelias Billy Idol The Ramones Robyn Hitchcock erm, I know I'm forgetting something. all of them in that wee place. plus, they had a weekly dance club I think I still have the flyers for.

wooo! we used to go see GWAR at the Berkeley Square in Berkeley when I was in HS (that's about 1984-85). It was the size of someone's suburban living room. Can you imagine?
