I first saw GWAR at a skate ramp out in the wilds of Northern Virginia. They were performing on one side of the half-pipe, while my friends and I stood on the other, occasionally tossing pumpkin guts down into the (literal) pit below, to mix with the fake blood and jizz, and real sweat and dog shit (somebody brought their dog...) to create a nearly frictionless surface more conducive to silent-film slapstick than proper moshing.
I remember a few years back, the city that spawned GWAR, Richmond, VA, refused to let Marilyn Manson play, because they said he violated community standards. Ahem... |

we used to go see GWAR at the Berkeley Square in Berkeley when I was in HS (that's about 1984-85).
It was the size of someone's suburban living room.
