Head used to hammer the square peg into the triangular hole... and he peed on the carpet.

Dr.Skinner was not happy.

There was an ancient light board at
the Lawrence Hall of Science in
Berkeley that did the same thing...

...till I smashed it.

Actually, I didn't say that right: the number that you arrive at, will always be the same as 0, 9, 18, etc.

The program "backtracks" from that.

I'm not a mind reader, but a prophet:

I prophesize that the symbol that you will choose will always be the same as the symbol corresponding to 0.

I don't know the formula to put this together, but check this:

1 ) Every time you add the two digits of a two digit number and substract it from the number, the sum of the resulting two digits is always 9.

84 8 + 4 = 12 84 - 12 = 72 7 + 2 = 9
43 4 + 3 = 7 43 - 7 = 36 3 + 6 = 9
26 2 + 6 = 8 26 - 8 = 18 1 + 8 = 9 etc.

2) Starting from 0, the same symbol repeats in a series of 9. 9, 18, 27, 36, 45, etc

3) The same symbol repeats for all numbers whose addition is the same. That is, the same symbol will appear if you choose 92 (9 + 2 = 11), 83, 74, 65, 56, 47, 38, 29 or 11.

The point is that the program always displays the same symbol, the one that corresponds to 0 (And 9, 18, 27, etc). No matter what number you choose, the result will always be the same.

Every time you try again, the symbol corresponding to 0 changes, making you believe you are "choosing" a different one.

I was told that the signs and numbers change once you click on the magic ball. But, it was too much for me to figure out at the time.
