That's right! Fuck Saddam. Let's invade France. We know they won't put up a fight, if history is our guide.

Saddam Hussein isn't Hitler. He just isn't. Remember that Hitler was so mad for power that he essentially burned himself out in a decade. Saddam has been in power for more than 20 years. He's not even Stalin, especially since Iraq doesn't have much power outside its own borders.

For some perspective, the estimate of the number of Kurds Saddam's regime has killed is roughly equal to the lowest estimates of the number of people who have died because of our sanctions...

He is a vicious, murdering dictator, but there are LOTS of those in the world. There are even ones who already HAVE WMD's and/or have much more direct connections to those who attacked us in 2001.

Even if Saddam deserves to be overthrown, there is no reason that he, specifically, needs to be overthrown by US, right now. He poses no more of an immediate threat to us than a dozen other regimes, and probably LESS of a threat than some of our purported allies. More to the point, by chosing to attack him now, the US almost guarantees increasing animosity towards us in the region.

In short, even if this is a right war, it isn't the right time, and we aren't the right people.

For the most part, these pro-Saddam protesters are lunatics, but if there were more like these ladies, I might have to switch sides.

One, Saddam is not an Islamic fundamentalist. His Ba'ath party is nominally socialist, but mainly secular Arab nationalist. The only shit he's interested in forcing on anyone, is keeping his party and supporters in charge of a unified Iraq and holding onto the oil reserves.

Two, the 'weapons of mass destruction' he is supposed to have are actually not that easy to use, let alone use against the U.S. He has no delivery system that could reach U.S. territory, unless he sends thousands of mules through customs with tubes of anthrax up their assholes. Were he able to do that, he might kill a few thousand people -- and promptly be bombed into oblivion. He's not stupid enough to try anything like that, unless of course he has absolutely nothing to lose, which is the position Bush is apparently trying to force him into. Look how Bush treats the UN inspectors.

'They get rid of the missiles, or we attack.'
OK, OK, they're getting rid of the missiles now.
'Oh no, they're not! They're not getting off that easy!'

If Saddam is such a threat, why is the Bushling having to bribe and threaten all of Iraq's closest neighbors into supporting his war? Turkey is getting $15 billion in aid for allowing 50,000 troops on their soil. At that rate, I think I can fit a couple of mattresses into my living room, if he wants to send troops over here. I promise not to let them drink any absinthe (not!).

If I were in the military, I'd look at what Wesley Clark has to say about this current standoff. I'd be extremely pissed off at Bush for gambling with my life, just to make people forget about the economy.

"The lowest estimate for the London march was 750,000... march organisers are quoting 2,000,000"

during the san francisco protests(i live in the area) organizers claimed there were over 250,000 people. the san francisco chronicle purchased overhead pictures of the protest, and counted something like 50,000... i think the uk protest was probably closer to 750,000. if not less...

"US losses in World War Two: 290,000 combatants and civilians. (Total known civilian deaths: 6.)
UK losses: 305,800 combatants; 60,600 civilians.
USSR losses: 11,285,000 combatants; 16,000,000 civilians.
French losses: 122,000 combatants; 470.000 civilians.
German losses: 3,250,000 combatants; 2,050,000 civilians.

Opposed to war on Iraq: Russia, France, Germany.
Locked and loaded: US, UK."

ok, if so what we should do, instead of attacking iraq right now, we should leave them alone until they build up thier army and stockpile enough weapons of mass destruction. and then they will be able to KILL AS MANY PEOPLE AS GERMANY DID!

good idea... its genious really.

if you dont learn from history, your doomed to repeat it.

...islamic fundamentalist(Sadam, imho)are just as bad, although they havent killed as many people, as nazis. they want the same shit... to force thier sick f*cked up world on the rest of us.

If Hussein blows up the oil wells and seeds the ground with anthrax, it'll be awhile before we can use that oil to pay for the war. Whoops. Oh well, war as leveraged buyout is always a shaky proposition.

The lowest estimate for the London march was 750,000 (from the police and we all know that they dramatically underestimate protest march figures), march organisers are quoting 2,000,000. Even the BBC (who take a very pro-establishment line) are talking about over 1,000,000 marchers. Don't ask me, I didn't get round to counting everyone but I got onto a vantage point just before going into Hyde Park at the end of the march route and looked back down Piccadily (a long, wide road) on an endless sea of people behind me and it was still like that when I left the Hyde Park rally 3 hours later.

Unlike the New York protest the police on the London march were very co-operative, telling protestors from outside London where to find the march starting points if they asked, chatting to marchers and at one point when I was dying for a piss they went out of there way to try to find out where the nearest public toilet was for me (although there was a bit of a queue). But I suppose just like the rest of the UK population, they don't want this war either.

We'll simply take war reparations in the form of oil. Which will put more money in Bush's cronies pockets and probably do nothing to improve our lot.
