V2 is a shop and performance space off that large shopping boulevard to the left, after about 5 minutes' walk straight from central station (if you went to the right, you'd hit all the Chinese restaurants and vinyl record stores). They have a great selection of weird experimental music and cyberculture-type books.

V2 were behind the DEAF, Dutch Electronic Arts Festival, at the Las Palmas warehouse last March. If I go to Rotterdam, it's usually for events like that.

June 2nd...is that for Nick Cave? It's tempting, but I've sworn off large shows for good. I go to Rotterdam every so often when V2 (v2.nl?) are having some cyber-art event.

Absinthe bar may well be serving the real stuff now; sometime I might go to check it out and see if anything's changed. Since the EU allows absinthe to be sold in shops, I don't see why the Absinthe Bar shouldn't sell the real stuff now. It may still criminally expensive.

That place that sells Neto Costa is called Quinta.

It's because of all the Winkels in Amsterdam. You used to be able to Winkel for 20 guilders, but now the whole place has gone to the winkels. Even the computers have winkels:

winkel

So why do they serve faux absinthe , can they legally serve Absinthe? I see a bottle of the clear la bleue on the shelves.

not sure enobale... ive never been in holland as a visitor. maybe if you googled something along the lines of "affordable accomodations in amsterdam" you could find what youre looking for?

i tried a few sites i thought may be useful but i can only seem to find the info in dutch and i doubt that would be very helpful to you. you could try this one... it seems to be in english.

I really want to go to Amsterdam this summer, I live in the United States though and it can be a little expensive. Any suggestions on the best/cheap places to stay? I heard you can rent houses in Amsterdam and they are cheaper to do that for a week then stay at a hotel, but I'm not 100 percent sure

Yeah, it's sort of inspired by Gaudi'. The "absinthe" is wormwood-free and costs about e8,- per glass. You can by Neto Costa, a mediocre Portuguese absinthe, at the liquor store whose name I forget, on Nieuwe Leliestraat at the Prinsnegracht, for about 30 euro. There are also a few shops that sell Habsburg rocket fuel. Also, a touristy-but-not-bad shop next to Boudisque on the Haringpakkersteeg (Herring packer alley) sells Libertine and that Pernod "contains absinthe herbs" stuff.

If you're coming here for Queensday, gimme a heads-up.

from the reviews I heard from people who have been to the Absinthe bar, it's not real Absinthe. Which is a shame because the front door to it is soo cool looking! Parts of it look like they are melting.

no... ive never been in that bar, didnt know it existed
and i was in A'dam 2 weeks ago as well

the thing is that ive yet to find absinthe in NL, and the one or two times i asked about it i was given dirty looks and told it was a banned substance and very dangerous because its addictive! gasp! horror!
i didnt bother pointing out that all the wares in the liquor store were addictive as are all the other drugs that are either legalised or tolerated in this country.
it just amazes me that you can buy shrooms and pot and hash or pop down to the local methadone clinic or the local smart shop, while everyone is rolling hand rolled cigarettes and drinking gin, but to mention absinthe is such a no-no.

At the bar it seems like they have a lot of different kinds to try. Thats what i like. Everytime i go to a bar i always catch myself looking for pastis. I never know what to do with all the others bottles.

Nice but if you look at the ''service of absinthe'' movie, the absinthe (or shall I say ''absynth'' in this case) doesn`t louche.

Cute waitress...
