Did you try Punt e Mes while you were in Italy? It's a type of red vermouth but not over sweet, goes well with soda or straight up.

I had lots of great drinks in Italy recently: Campari, Mirto, Cymbar, Grappa. I even came up with my own cocktail. I wanted a brandy with a beer chaser, so I asked the waiter for "a brandy and a Peroni." He looked puzzled, but he came back with a tall glass of beer and I sat there waiting for my brandy. Finally I got impatient and took a gulp of the beer. GACK!! The waiter thought I said "a Brandy and Peroni" so he mixed them together.

Believe it or not, I was a teetotaler until about age 26. After rather wild career as a juvenile delinquent.
But I am a huge fan of citron & soda so this will no doubt make me very happy.

Kallisti the afficienado of tasty cocktail concoctions NOT well-acquianted with Campari??! Egads, how have ye lived thus far??
The lovely orangey-pink drink I was sipping at Montage apree Moulin Rouge was a campari & soda. I will certainly bring some to the Bastille soiree. You will be initiated.

Oh yes - Campari is my daily bev of choice (I just can't do absinthe daily). The bitter orange completely floats my boat.
A chilled Campari & soda on a hot day - yesssssss. For extra kick, add a twist of infused vodka (lemon, rasberry, or orange all work nice, especially if you infuse it yourself).

Gang,
I'm Campari crazy! Ever tried the stuff? It's like nothing I've ever had before -- full-bodied, yet not syrupy; complex, delicious. Put it with soda water over ice and enjoy!
