I was raised near Climax :-) Hehe

Greetings everyone, my first post. I thought I'd take you up on the invitation. I promise I'll try not to ask any stupid questions though. I've been lurking long enough that I think I've done my homework.

Ah, yes. I used to drive a truck in that area. Once I had to make a pickup at the Climax Rubber Company.

That's a local favorite.

Calling Garrison Keillor ...

By Artemis on Thursday, August 30, 2001 - 07:59 am: Edit

Possum Trot, Kentucky was named after the peculiar gait that Head witnessed for himself as the unfortunate marsupial exited the garbage can - possum moving pretty fast for a possum (still pretty slow by human or dog standards), but legs flailing with a frenzy that it seems should propel him three times faster. I've been to Possum Trot many times; attended a funeral there once and sold a car to a boy from Possum Trot.

When I lived in that area, I also tried to find Monkey's Eyebrow, which is on the map, not far from Possum Trot, but it's just a crossroads now, suitable for nothing but selling your soul to the Devil - the settlement is long gone. Ditto Bandana, in the same county. All of these are in western Kentucky, near the confluence of the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers.

And what do they announce when a man from Fertile marries a woman from Manly?

By Pataphysician on Thursday, August 30, 2001 - 07:13 am: Edit

The neighboring towns of Fertile and Manly, which resulted in this wedding announcement in the newspaper:

"Manly Man Marries Fertile Woman"

Isn't there a place called Cuba, Missouri (or maybe Illinois - somewhere in the area around St. Louis). I think I have a picture of a roadsign that says "Cuba" and it was somewhere in that area...

And let's not forget the university 'Miami of Ohio'. (What - tanned beach-bunny co-eds running around in flamingo-printed bikinis in 10-foot high December midwest snowbanks?) That one always confused me.

London, KY
Versailles, KY (yep, named for, but locals pronounce it as VER-sales)

KY also has Big Bone Lick too and Transylvania University in Lexington.

Louisiana's got End of the World...go out to Chalmette, lower St. Bernard and keep driving until the road ends on a dock that has gas pumps that have been empty for 22 years.

Yee-haw, more fun than you can shake a stick at.
