I remember back in the late 60s when I was living in San Francisco, Bakersfield did have a bad Redneck reputation. Those Bakersfield boys didn't cotton to the longhairs.

I think it gets a bad rap because of all the Redneck / Oakie stuff. I moved here in '89 when I met my, now, wife. I had moved from the Laguna Beach area to the Bay Area a year earlier.
I absolutely hated my first year here. Wanted the beach - the ocean - somewhere cool. - not 110 degrees in the shade!
The next year wasn't as bad - stay in the pool - keep drinking!
Been here ever since - have made some great friends - plenty of places to go - an hour to the mountains - 2 hours to the beach - lots of cool bars...good food. - Hell, I even ran for Mayor last election. Got spanked - but I ran. May even run again...
It's a great place once you get used to it!

why do I find Bakersfield so scary.
When I drive from Vegas to San Francisco I drive thru Bakersfield and it gives me the creeps.
Tell me I'm just being paranoid and Bakersfield is a terrific place. I know Buck Owens lived there, so it can't be all bad.
