The Fée Verte Absinthe Forum - The Oldest, Largest, Most Authoritative Absinthe Forum. _ Administrative News & Site Updates _ The "La Fee Verte" philosophy

Posted by: Oxygenee Mar 12 2008, 06:25 PM

Edited from a recent exchange in the General Absinthe Discussion sub-forum, here for the benefit of newcomers is an outline of my philosophy as site-owner and admin:

QUOTE
Forum traffic is growing at the fastest rate it ever has, approaching 200 000 visits per month. New members join every day. We expect new members to have read the registration conditions, to have read the FAQ, to have browsed a little through the past threads, to introduce themselves briefly, and to write reasonably correct and grammatical English, unless they are non-native speakers. That's it. If you feel that that's setting the bar too high, I'm not going to lose any sleep about it.

As for the general tone here: it's an absinthe forum, with all that entails: an online 21st century version of the cafes that Verlaine and Toulouse Lautrec frequented in the 1890's. Robust debate is good. Humour, wit and sarcasm all have their place. If you voice controversial opinions, you're going to need to be able to defend them. If you act idiotically, you'll be laughed at. We value intelligence, knowledge and wit more than politeness for its own sake. I think that's appropriate for the drink and its ethos. Some of the best and brightest minds in the absinthe world post here, and have done so for going on eleven years now.

I bought the forum a few years ago not to for business reasons, but to help out a friend, who was starting to find the whole thing unmanageable. I've tried to run it in the same spirit she did. We don't charge for membership. We don't charge for events we occasionally organize. We don't sell subscriptions. We don't sell advertising. We don't edit posts. Our buyers guide - by far the largest and most comprehensive anywhere - is absolutely impartial, and doesn't necessarily even include all the specific absinthes my company sells. There are discrete links to some of my commercial absinthe sites, but also to many rival vendors. I don't use the forum at all to promote my own business or products, except in the very rare occasions where something is of very general interest, like a big pre-ban absinthe cache. Fee Verte isn't a business, it's a trust I inherited from Kallisti, who created it all. It's run for the benefit of the members, and on my watch it always will be.

How juvenal. Given my provenance, it's easy for me not to do that in reasonably correct and grammatical English.

Um, no.

Not far enough south

Sorry.

I'd rather have some of them snapping turtles around here. Or a pymph.

Oxy,
It's a dirty job. But someone's gotta do it.

"In foro" -- brilliant!

Who let them in? I thought they were still merely prowling the gardens.

It all goes to show that…

Quidquid latine dictum sit, altum sonatur.

(I like to translate "altum" to "profound" in English - it's a guilty pleasure).

You're on a new drug guyz?

Posted by: absinthist Mar 18 2008, 09:37 AM

It's Evolution, I am telling you. Nice Sock you put on, Socky.

Posted by: OCvertDe Mar 18 2008, 10:57 AM

Posted by: absinthist Mar 18 2008, 11:08 AM

PTFA, Socky has changed his avatar after so many years.

Posted by: mthuilli Mar 18 2008, 12:45 PM

Was getting tired of the other sock, he was full of… whatever…

This new sock puppet has a nicer smile, and is… hem… cleaner…
And as you can see, he only sleeps on dried A.A., he tried fenel seeds too but found it less comfortable.

I adopted him last saturday so say 'Hi' to my new socky:

I'm sorry to say
that AA looks like hay.

Posted by: mthuilli Mar 18 2008, 01:18 PM

A pierced heart, does that count?

G&C:
Um no.
Just dried A.A..

Posted by: Absomphe Mar 18 2008, 01:43 PM

About time you let Prince Albert out of the can.

Nevermind, Latin's just Greek to me, anyway.

Jeez…
Colors are not realistic in that picture, I had to change them to make the puppet look nicer.
Also, the puppet is only 1" large, should give you an idea about the size of the whole scene.
Anyway, that dried A.A. has a very nice fragrance, but for whatever reason, I can't transpose it through the picture. Strange, isn't it?

Posted by: Jaded Prol Mar 18 2008, 02:44 PM

Looks like hay -- and not just the color.

Nice sock though.

Posted by: Shabba53 Mar 18 2008, 02:49 PM

You're real funny guyz.
How you can tell from such a small and photochopp'd picture is a total mistery to me.
Makes me think of this weird psycho pictures where you see whatever the fuck you want to see.
I give up. You beat me, you're the experts.

Haytemisia haysinthium?

Posted by: mthuilli Mar 18 2008, 03:30 PM

That's it, we're on some new species here, after the Parsleymisia parsleythium.

Posted by: The Standard Deviant Mar 18 2008, 03:39 PM

I think a parsleymonious approach is best here.
