Oscar's original epitaph:
QUOTE
To my words they durst add nothing, and my speech dropped upon them

After his remains were relocated:
QUOTE
And alien tears will fill for him,
Pity's long-broken urn,
For his mourners will be outcast men,
And outcasts always mourn

I have to agree with Uncle Al - with or without genitals, that statue on the tomb is ugly and ponderous, and disconcertingly Teutonic. It seems better suited to the gateway of an SS fortress than to the tomb of a poet.

QUOTE
The tomb, designed by modernist sculptor Jacob Epstein with a flying Assyrian-style angel, survived almost unscathed until 1985, except for the angel's notoriously prominent genitals being hacked off.

Then, the expense of cleaning operations to deal with increasing graffiti on the tomb led the descendants of Wilde and of his friend and executor Robert Ross to try, successfully, to get it listed as a historic monument.

The hope was that fines of thousands of euros for defacing the tomb would deter fans of the author of "The Importance of Being Earnest".

But in 1999 the graffiti was replaced by a much more worrying phenomenon when someone had the idea of planting a large, lipsticked kiss on the tomb, sparking a craze for Wilde's many admirers visiting Paris.

So much for the healing power of kisses. The grease was infiltrating the stone and a glass barrier was erected late last year.

QUOTE
"Kisses for Oscar Wilde were not just signs of love, he associated them with danger, even death," said Everett, who has written a screenplay about Wilde's final years with which he hopes to make a directorial debut next year.

That's Rupert Everett, a British actor. No mention of his writing credits.

Yep. $12,000 fine didn't deter the vandals. I bet there's not much graffiti in Singapore, where the punishment includes a bamboo ass whipping.

I'd prefer caning to years in prison any day, and I'm not into pain.

I believe caning is not all that different in effect from being slashed with a dull machete.

I have no interest in putting my belief to the test though.

No need to be "hacked off" about it.

I was looking at a 1955 Westinghouse Studio One production of Summer Pavilion. Charles Drake took Elizabeth Montgomery to a place in the Old Quarter of New Orleans. (I couldn't catch the name)
They ordered a Pernod, because her mother said "it has wormwood in it and it will make them crazy".

Not a movie, but the TV show on AMC, Hell on Wheels.
In the beginning sequence of season 3 ep.4 of Hell on Wheels,
Cullen Bohannon and Elam Ferguson are going to try to secure timber for the railroad from the Kiowa. Along the way they meet Jimmy Two Squaws. A fur trapper married to the Kiowa Chiefs daughter.

Over the end of a gun barrel Jimmy asks Bohannon where he's from. To which he replies, "Meridian Mississippi."

Two Squaws: "Well I knew it! Son you got Mississippi River water rollin' off your tongue. Hell, I'm from Louisiana."

Bohannon: "I used to go to New Orleans once a year before the war."

Two Squaws: "Yeah, I been there once, stayed at the St. Charles Hotel. Had me a Sazerac."
