Just look at ebay. Most of that stuff is a bunch of crap but somebody is collecting it.

I still do.

Bottle arrived securely packaged with an injection-molded styrofoam packing device. Uses less material than those used by other shippers, something I like. Cuz I'm that way.

The bottle is, as has been said, not nearly as silly-looking in person. I appreciated the very accurate historical text on the back, description of the French preparation method, and especially the notice at the very bottom:

Warning: Contents Highly Flammable! Serious risk of injury if contents ignited. Do not deliberately ignite or consume near open flame.

The Surgeon General's warning about pregnancy, etc. and the UPC symbol both scream, "American market"!

The use of a T-cork instead of a traditional cork seems a wise choice, and is perfectly appropriate to both the market and the price point of the product.

Editor's note: Review of Lucid Absinthe Superieure is merged into its own review thread in the Buyer's Guide Forum here and in the main Buyer's Guide here.

I tried Lucid. It's real absinthe, not pastis nor a peculiar absinthe simulacrum such as Doubs. Unfortunately, by contemporary commerical standards, it's not very good absinthe. There is an odd pepper note on the nose that may or may not age out. Beyond the pepper, the aroma is flat, almost musty. In tasting it, the anise and wormwood are there, but flacid. Whether the weakness is due to the distillation technique or an attempt to appeal to the American market, I won't speculate. Lucid does not remotely approach the vibrant flavors of L'Artisianale nor is it close in quality to PF1901.

As the first American-legal absinthe in quite a while, Lucid is a landmark product. I hope it paves the way for better absinthe in the future.

I decided to try it with sugar.

So, I looked in the cabinet. I had:

Brown sugar. No, that'd be gross.

Confectioner's sugar. No, that'd taste like corn starch.

Xylitol. Um . . . I haven't used that in anything yet.

Big Bag O' Splenda. Well, that's all that's left. I don't have any sugar cubes or granulated "normal" sugar. So, 1/4 tsp went into the see-saw, followed by water.

It neutralizes the hint of bitterness in the unsweetened version. Might be helpful for newbies. Not my preference, however. It actually removed so much "edge" that at first I thought I'd overwatered it! Then the alcohol bit my tongue and I realized I'd underwatered. Oops.

It did add to the mouthfeel.

So anyway, if you like to sugar your absinthe, you'll likely like Lucid sweetened. If you like it unsweetened, as I do, I think you'll definitely enjoy unsweetened Lucid.

I like it better unsweetened, but I'm not sinking the sweetened, so it's not been made unpleasant.
