Absinthe Duplais is produced with the typical Swiss precision and care. The base is a French receipt dating back to the 19th century. Absinthe Duplais is distilled on old stills, this way we can assure that the result is accurate and authentic. Herbs are maybe the most important factor when it comes to high quality Absinthe. Therefore we have selected the best possible quality to make Absinthe Duplais an adorable, excellent drink.

COLOR BEFORE WATER 10/10
Crystal clear.

LOUCHE ACTION 9/10
Slow rising rather nice louche. In order to make full score it should have been the extreme cloudy pearly thick that the Zürcher Fee pulled off. This is however very fine.

COLOR AFTER WATER 10/10
It's white with a blueish grey sort of tint. Not much to complain about really.

AROMA 25/30
Smooth fruity wormwoody thing here along with a nice fennel touch on the nose. A slight minty hint as well but it stays way back and could be something else. It's a nice complex aroma but it doesn't quite bloom out as I had expected it to. After adding water it lingers on nicely and the wormwood is still very noticable.

MOUTH-FEEL 7/10
Overall it's very nice and rich. Given its high alcohol content it gives a more powerful alcohol bit than an ordinary blanche at around 55%. Adding a bit more water of course changes that and it's very pleasant.

TASTE 16/20
Quite the bite actually but not bad. It's like an ordinary blanche/bleue but without the too common fennel front and with another twist to it. A slightly dry finish which could come from the wormwood but it feels it could also be a process thing that could be fixed... It doesn't really ruin anything though.

OVERALL IMPRESSION 7/10
I like this one though I believe the dry finish could be worked on to make a more harmonious (!?) drink. That would increase this score by a point or two.

COLOR BEFORE WATER 10/10
Clear.

LOUCHE ACTION 10/10
Stunning louche when cold water is slowly poured. Starts from the bottom as it should.
Clouds raise from the bottom and when more water is dripped or poured slowly small flakes
like snow form above the cloud. Turbulent oil drop/trace play on the surface looked as if
something was chasing them.

COLOR AFTER WATER 9/10
Thick greyish white, a little bluish around the edge. Beautiful color.

AROMA 24/30
Neat in glass: Juicy and herbal with fennel and anise on top.
After water: While slowly diluting it, it gives an aroma both flowery and "forestry".
When the drink is ready, the overall aroma is mouthwatering.

MOUTH-FEEL 7/10
Creamy, although not as creamy as certain la bleues. Afterwards a bit tingling on the tongue.
But there is nothing wrong here, this kind of mouth-feel is fine with such an herbally intense absinthe.

TASTE 17/20
Anise, fennel and wormwood are in extremely good balance. They form a kind of triangle that keeps
any taste of alcohol "inside" them. The taste is "solid" without any sort of "hollowness".

OVERALL IMPRESSION 9/10
Duplais Blanche is a very good traditional blanche absinthe that I really recommend
to both experienced absintheurs and beginners. The German text on the label speaks of
Swiss precision. That is what Duplais Blanche in my opinion truly is.

Perfectly clear.

LOUCHE ACTION 8/10
Louches slowly at first, due to the high alcohol content, then rapidly forms a dense cloud. Not milkshake thick, but still an elegant louche.

COLOR AFTER WATER 9/10
Greyish white, mostly opaque.

AROMA 26/30
A delicate balance of anise with alpine herbal goodness. There's a peppery coriander note, and other flowers I can't put my finger on. Clean with no off putting scents, and surprisingly little alcohol heat. It doesn't fill the room, but it sure smells good when you get close.

MOUTH-FEEL 8/10
Initially dry and crisp, with a nice creamy follow through in the aftertaste. Could be thicker, but the emphasis here seems to be on airy floral notes which might be overpowered by added creaminess.

TASTE 17/20
This absinthe is thoroughly delicious, more herbal and floral than any other blanche on the market. All the ingredients are balanced extremely well, and despite the 72% alcohol content, which is high for a blanche, there is no marked alcohol bite. I detect a restrained amount of star anise, which I like in blanches as long as it is kept in the background. I do wish it had more wormwood. What's in there is good, but a bit more might even land it a score in the low 90s.

OVERALL IMPRESSION 9/10
This is the new benchmark for commercial blanches. I can find no flaws in the process or taste profile. It's intensely herbal, airy and floral with a subtle fruity undertone, and really stands out from its competitors. It's quite refreshing. I wouldn't mind a creamier profile, but that's a personal preference and in no way reflects poorly on the quality of the drink. What I perceive to be coriander and star anise do not overpower the other flavours, which is rare among blanches that use them. The maker should be proud.

PERSONAL NOTES
I diluted it 4:1 instead of the standard 3:1 due to the higher alcohol content. At 3:1 the flavours don't fully develop and the aroma doesn't bloom as much.

Fully dilouted at 1:2 ratio. A bit to fast.

COLOR AFTER WATER 7/10
A touch of grey. No run of oils on glass. No blue nuances in light. No glow to it. Nice louche but not stunning in any way.

AROMA 24/30
It smells good. I smell Annis mostly. I also smell something soft and floral.

MOUTH-FEEL 9/10
No tongue numbing, soft and some what creamy.

TASTE 15/20
This Absinthe is too dry. I'm comparing this to the Franco Suisse. I think some mint would help?

OVERALL IMPRESSION 7/10
I think more could be done to improve the flavor of this one.

Clear and bright as it should.

LOUCHE ACTION 8/10
Nice gradual louche but maybe a bit too fast. At 1:3 ratio is’t all done but I keep adding up to the usual 1:4 ratio I use on such high proof absinthes.Very good without anything outstanding.

COLOR AFTER WATER 8/10
Thickly and milky white. No subtelty there.

AROMA 17/30
Neat: Strong and upfront wormwood. There must be lots of it, too much for my own taste. It smells green, as if the wormwood used was harvested quite early without much flower buds and included lots of twigs. It's not necessarily bad but it makes for a very earthy absinthe. Tiny traces of over cooking. Alcool base is raw.
Louched : The very earthy and grassy smell is still present. Alcohol went to the back, luckily. I almost don't detect those traces of overcooking anymore, it is hiden behind lots of anis and earthy wormwood.

MOUTH-FEEL 6/10
Tongue numbing. It bites. It’s more on the aggressive side, I would prefer more charm.

TASTE 13/20
Unsurprisingly after smelling so much wormwood in it, even with sugar there's still a distinctive bitterness to it. It's not bad for an absinthe of this character profile (aggressive, bites the tongue and linger there, clutching your tastebuds). It is strong and simple. Anis and wormwood are so strong it hides anything behind.

OVERALL IMPRESSION 5/10
This absinthe lacks charm. It's all there strongly in your face. I'm having difficulties finishing my glass. Some smokers will like it I guess.

Refreshing, delicate, not heavy

Pontica, anise, hyssop, wormwood, some coriander and star anise in the very back, slightly piquant with nicely pronounced herbaceousness.

OVERALL IMPRESSION 8/10
I have had the regular one and that one seems to be slightly modified, more herbal, anyway a very good blanche, not la bleue

Just read your rewiew. I think I have to explain, that this is not a typical "La Bleue" Absinthe, so the comparison to the Franco Suisse is not really possible. The Duplais Blanche is rather a typical franch "Blanche" - which has a completely different charater. It's not ment to be very sweet but dry. So this is on purpose. Also the blueish hue one can find in "La Bleue" style Absinthes can not be found there for the reason that it's a Blanche - not a Bleue.

This was an email sent to me from Markus. Markus I should of remembered what I had learned when I wrote my review. Your true saying not to compare it to the Franco. With that being said truly the taste should be more like an 18/20 , and Overall impression 8/10. Bringing it to 84 out of 100 to be truly fair in my review. Also I can say it's the only Blanche I have ever had. It is still tasty and I will buy it again.

If you read the whole message, you'll see that Markus made a distinction between Blanches and Bleues, and my guess would be that Neptunati followed that very closely by saying the Duplais Blanche was his only Blanche.

I'm surprised by all the raving reviews of this Duplais Blanche.

It is not bad for the price but I would not call this balanced at all. For sure there's a lot of earthy wormwood in there, to the point of being really to the front and the alcool base leaves to be desired. It tastes raw, so to speak.

I'll now go sample the Duplais Balance… let's see if it's up to its name.

I drink 90% of my absinthes with sugar and many people do so I think a review with sugar is relevant to many readers, as long as the use of sugar is specified in the review.
