If Christian institutions could produce this kind of music all the time I would actually consider becoming religious.

Lyrics transcript:

Oh sinner do not stray
From the straight and narrow way
For the Lord is surely watching what you do
If you approach the Devil's den
Turn round don't enter in
Lest the hand of the Almighty fall on you

He'll fuck you up (he'll fuck you up)
Yes God will fuck you up
If you dare to disobey his stern command
He'll fuck you up (he'll fuck you up)
Don't you know he'll fuck you up
So you better do you praying while you can

Long ago a man named Lot
Had a wife he thought was hot
But she could not stop her black and sinful ways
You know it was her own damn fault
When God turned that bitch to salt
That's the way he used to work back in those days

He fucked him up (he fucked him up)
He really fucked him up
When the people went and turned their backs on him
He can fuck you up (he'll fuck you up)
No shit he'll fuck you up
Just like he fucked the people up back then

I used to have a friend named Ray
Who walked that evil way
He cursed and drank and broke his neighbor's fence
You know Ray was full aware
That some sheep were over there
And he knew in the Biblical sense

God fucked him up (he fucked him up)
He went and fucked Ray up
Went and paid him back for all his wicked sins
He fucked him up (he fucked him up)
Fucked that boy completely up
Now he's married to a Presbyterian

Bob Dylan said it first on his Highway 61 album.

Come to think of it, didn’t he turn religious?

I'm pretty much an Atheist (don't outright reject the idea of god but think it's pretty unlikely), but I listen to a Christian band called 16 Horsepower and I can't recommend them enough. I think Artemis knows them too.

They're the type of music that makes you think of growing up in a one room dust bowl shack in the middle of Kansas, and after you've drank a bottle of bourbon and are loading up the shotgun to stick in your mouth and be done with it, you get the bright idea to go down to the crossroads and see if the devil has anything he can offer you before you blow your brains out. So you go down there and at your darkest hour, god heads you off at the pass. That's what they're like. Mindblowingly good musicians too complete with banjo, accordian, fiddle, upright bass, etc.

Other than that, the only religious music I like is The Dead Kennedy's "Moral Majority" and Otis Nixon and Jello Biafra's "Prairie Home Invasion".

Who could blame him?

I mean, Yusuf Islam was SO inspirational.

I might add that the artist in question who've written the 'God will fuck you up' song is called Tracy Nelson and it's from the album 'Live From Cell Block D'.

I love 16 Horsepower, they've done a lot of fun stuff.

I think in this chorus, it has to be "He fucked 'em up"
We've just been singing about a Sara and Lot, and in this chorus we're singing about "the people", instead of a single man.
( But thanks for the transcript! )

Damn, here I was hoping this was the slogan for a new malt liquor:

"GOD: It'll fuck you up!"

Close, but no cigar. The Tracy Nelson song of Live from Cell Block D was written by Lyle Lovett and is absolutely NOT the God Will Fuck You Up song.

Instead, it is faux-"old-timey" country singer John R. Butler's "Hand of the Almighty" from The Best of the Red Peters Comedy Music Hour, Vol. 1.
