Manufactured by Paul Devoille, France for the Vom Fass chain to be sold bulk.

Average score 49

Reviewed by Bruno Rygseck 7/18/2006

COLOR BEFORE WATER 6/10
Brownish green, no haze, no sediment, natural looking. I do not know the age of the barrell contents (I should have asked in the shop) so it is difficult to say whether it looks like this when new or is it due to aging. I liked it, anyway.

LOUCHE ACTION 5/10
Starts and builds up acceptably but the louche in the end is nothing special.

COLOR AFTER WATER 4/10
A little too transparent to please my eye after dilution to drinking strength.
Also not much oil drop or trail playing on the surface. Otherwise no faults.

AROMA 12/30
Neat in glass, an OK "regular" aroma, not so floral.
After dilution, clear wormwood aroma and something like fennel too.
Dilution did not bring out any mentionable floral aromas, either.

MOUTH-FEEL 5/10
Not really creamy enough. A little stinging in the end. But no big faults.

TASTE 11/20
I would call it an regular or ordinaire taste without much dimension,
and a slightly bitter aftertaste. But EvF does taste like absinthe without doubt.

OVERALL IMPRESSION 6/10
The EvF is drinkable. It could really be enjoyable if it had some more herbal aromas
and a creamier mouthfeel. The way it is now it serves OK as a regular absinthe.

Bruno Rygseck scores Emanuelle 55% - Vom Fass 49 out of 100

I bought some three years ago, when I was in Bregenz. This review sounds about the way I remember it.

Very much so. I still have 85% left of a bottle I purchased in London several years ago.

I think I have one drink of that one left. No details on the bottle I got it in though, it just said ‘Absinthe Emmanuelle.’

Thanks, Markus, for updating the Buyer´s Guide! You mention in your (absinthe.se) review of Emanuelle that it is sweetened but mine was not, maybe this has been changed since you got your bottle (May 2003 if I read it right). Could it also be that this newer version is distilled instead of an oil mix? I would say that it has some similarity to VdF in aroma, taste and mouthfeel but way behind in all these...

SD, how old is your sample?

Well, I would say that the one I have is probably distilled also. Only my guess in 2003 was that it seemed very much oil mix like. The single herb distillates in the VdF seem better made than the ones assembled in the Emanuelle which is why I thought it might have been an oil mix.

Maybe it wasn't.

However, the whole concept of Vom Fass is selling this stuff in bulk and the easiest way to do that would be NOT to ship it ready mixed but only the essences to make up the final product mixed with alcohol. That's another thing that made me think so.

That's why I've started putting dates to the reviews at my site, and also to indicate whenever they were updated with new info. It just takes a while to go through everything.

..."Emanuelle" makes me think of so much more than mediocre absinthe...

I think it's probably about a year and a half old, I'm not entirely sure. I think it was a decanted one like Hartsmar's.

Come to think of it, I know I listed the Emanuelle as a distilled absinthe in the Quick Reference part of my site. I think I'll have to call Vom Fass to sort this out. viking_emoticon.gif

Thanks, guys. I also surfed the vomfass sites a little. I did not find anything about the method of manufacture yet.

Their German site describes absinthe without T-hype. The T-word is there, too, but I suppose it is
"just for the record". But the New Zealand site has both that and a bit strong serving suggestion, 1:1
( http://www.vomfass.co.nz/ProductsCatalog.php?cat=28 ).

Yes... me too! It would be interesting to know if EvF has improved during these years.
As far as my points above are concerned it did not matter of course whether it is distilled or not.

Cheers, BR

Well, the site lists this little bit about the product:

QUOTE
Spirit with herbal essences, 55% alcohol, contains thujon

http://www.vomfass.com/english/produkte/me...?id=133&k=9

Now - define essences...
