Sluggish? Try Peru's Frog Juice
By LESLIE JOSEPHS 05.04.07, 9:00 AM ET

Carmen Gonzalez plucks one of the 50 frogs from the aquarium at her bus stop restaurant, bangs it with a pyrogenee to kill it and then makes two incisions along its belly and peels off the skin as if husking corn.

She's preparing frog juice, a beverage revered by some Andean cultures for having the power to cure asthma, bronchitis, sluggishness and a low sex drive. A drink of so-called "Peruvian Viagra" sells for about 90 cents.

Gonzalez adds three ladles of hot, white bean broth, two generous spoonfuls of honey, raw aloe vera plant and a shot of absinthe - a French liquor believed to boost stamina and sex drive - into a household blender.

Then she drops the frog in.

Once strained, the result is a starchy, milkshake-like liquid that stings the throat and tastes of licorice.

At least 50 customers a day ask for steaming beer mugs of frog juice at Gonzalez's countertop-only restaurant in eastern Lima, and many treat the concoction as their morning - and afternoon - cup of coffee.

Rebeca Borja, a 53-year-old housewife and mother of five, originally from Lima's central highland city of Huancayo, where the beverage is common, said simply: "It gives you power."

Poor little kermits. I will pass any partaking of frog fluid.

L'Artisinale is apparently the endagered species of absinthes. I still have a little bit of my L'Artisinale left, kept on purpose to see how it aged. It's now a year old, and I must say it's outstanding, one of the best modern absinthes I've had. The wormwood agression has softened and it now blends much better with all the other flavours than it did when it came out. Initially I thought it would be interesting to see this absinthe made with a wine base, but now I have changed my mind, and think that neutral base was perfect for this absinthe. Maybe with absinthe becoming technically legalized in the US (if it has low-enough Thuj0ne), this will create an added incentive for Eric to either make a batch here or to do another batch abroad, as it would be a shame if this absinthe were to become extinct... I'm sure it's not an easy undertaking, but it certainly seems there's a limited but vocal demand for another L'Artisinale...

I feel like l'Artisanale was an artwork, a moment in time. It was new people at an unfamiliar distillery, with magic herbs, both brought with them and made available to them onsite. It was a confluence of events and people and material come together for a moment and then gone, leaving these bottles as testament.

I have no doubt we'll see more work from this artist, but don't expect him to paint the same painting again.

Oh, wait, I just remembered that I have another bottle stashed away!

And I will sell it for . . . ONE MILLION DOLLARS!

Or, more likely, keep it and drink it. abs-cheers.gif

Thanks to Eric for the sample. I enjoyed this while cooking dinner (which is when I usually drink Absinthe). I started the louche at 7:30 and finished the glass around 9:20pm.

Editor's note: Review merged into main review post and into the Buyer's Guide.
