Good to hear, but I wouldn't count on it. I'm sure a lot depends on how good you are at talking your way out of a situation, and the individual custom agent's mood etc.

You can bring 6 liters a person, if declared and you pay duty. Done it on almost every trip I've ever been on, but never have been asked to actually pay the duty.

Always just waved through after asking me a few questions. No biggie. Only lost 2 bottles. Wine and mini absinthes and absinthe egg nog all made it through just fine. He only cared about the english word, "wormwood" on two of the bottles.

I wasn't about to translate, "absinthe" for him on the others. wink.gif

I certainly wouldn't think that they'd want to get all hard-ass over someone (allegedly) smuggling booze for personal consumption. More time and money than it's worth, I would think. Collecting duty ought to pacify them more times than not.

I cannot find any reference to wormwood anywhere on the Customs and Border Protection website. I'd say you have a strong chance of success if you decide to appeal. Assuming you can find someone to appeal to!

Yes, I think I do, but I am not sure I want to start a fight with them over $80 and wind up on some list or something and wind up getting checked every single time I travel.

That's what I thought Tuesday when I tested positive for explosives at IAH. Fun times…

I mentioned earlier in the thread that someone else had had their absinthes confiscated recently. He was told that he had 30 days to appeal. It sounds like you weren't given that option.

The other person who recently had their absinthe confiscated appealed … and just got their absinthe back.

I was not told of that option and it has been over 30 days unfortunately.
