Well, I joined that other forum recently and figured I might as well sign up over here too, given I'm currently in MUST READ ALL THE THINGS (about absinthe) mode. So, um, hi! I'm a Silicon Valley-dwelling engineer-nerd-type catlady with way too many hobbies. I live in a house in the San Jose area with my awesome significant-other and our quartet of spoiled kitties.

As for how I got interested in absinthe…well, once I was disabused of my adolescent belief that "wormwood" was actually wood that had been infested by hallucinogen-secreting worms, shock.gif I became mightily intrigued by the fact that absinthe had this whole complicated sordid history. The green color and tendency to show up in vampire movies helped pique my interest too.

All that aside, though, the thing that finally compelled me to try the stuff was learning that it tasted like anise and fennel and other interesting tasty herbs and whatnot. It sounded like the exact beverage I would have designed to my own taste specifications if I'd ever gotten around to doing something like that.

Anyhow…to avoid making what should be a short story long, the first absinthe I ended up trying (just last month!) was Lucid, and the second was Ridge Verte. I liked them both a lot, though at this point I definitely think I prefer the Ridge as it's a fair bit more complex and seems to have more interesting "stages" of flavor. I'm certainly planing on trying other types as the opportunities present themselves, and I look forward to continuing obsessively reading along the way.

Someday this, too, will be a zombie thread. Until that time…

Enjoy the ride.

Thanks, I think?

Re. my cats, I'm not sure what their presence in my home has to do with the potential for my intro thread to ultimately join the ranks of the brain-eating undead, but I'll keep an eye on it for foot-dragging, moaning, and other signs of impending zombiehood.

Re. hallucinogen-secreting worms…yeah, I had, um, kind of a vivid imagination as a teenager. Believe me, it's been a long time since I entertained such a ridiculous notion. tongue.gif

Re. "stages of flavors", I realize my phrasing there was a bit awkward, but that's the thing about awkwardness…sometimes it's hard to avoid it even when you're aware of it. In my extreme newbiehood I confess to being quite ignorant of the proper vocabulary for describing that particular property of certain beverages that results in different tastes asserting themselves throughout the drinking process.

As such, I don't plan on posting here a whole heck of a lot; mainly I'm here to read and learn and will endeavor not to make a nuisance of myself as I explore the fascinating and delicious realm of absinthe. abs-cheers.gif

My suggestion is not to question yourself. Trust your intelligence. Trust your taste. The rest of us are no more impressive than your tits.

He was complementing you (maybe). Clever or colorful phrases out of context fuel the Drop Dead Fred Thread.

Long past those years I had something like that idea about wormwood, although not as concrete and vivid. In retrospect my ignorance did carry the nuance of the worm-holy remnants of the nightstand of a medieval bishop, macerated in an alchemist's flask to extract something mind-bending.

Change your plan. Post here a lot.

I was going to say that I found the tits photo disappointing if only because it's a stock pic not your own feeder. On the other hand, given the cats, that may well be for the best.

As for your planning to post much, well then, what do you expect to read? It's the seldom-posters that complain about the forum being dead. As for learning, you can only do that by drinking. Which is an excellent accompaniment to posting.

Don't worry about not having anything to say. That's rarely stopped anyone.

Welcome, Coralyne. When I was young and first heard of absinthe, I thought it was some kind of hair tonic.

Wasn't it sold under the counter after the ban in barber shops in Paris as such? Uncanny coincidence.
