Interesting - I didn't realize gin ever fell out of favor in the UK.

Speaking of vermouth, I can never seem to make myself search out anything other than Cinzano, Gallo, and/or Martinin & Rossi. I probably like the Cinzano best, but does anyone here have a vermouth that they consider to be noticeably better than others?
