I was thinking more about this kind of secret society.

Me too, from the getgo. Any American interested in absinthe for ten years and hasn't been here must have been somewhere. But if not, well, I admire anybody who drills his own hole.
QUOTE
One of our clan was given (at Christmas) a "bag" of herbs to make absinthe at home !!! We advised him against it - but he's moving forward . . . I've read some bad things about absinthe "kits" like this - - - and my attitude is leaning towards = "leave it to the professionals" - - - what says the group?

I don't know about the group, if there is a group, but the official attitude here, endorsed, indeed promulgated, by the Grand Mamou, is leave the crimes to the criminals. It's safer for them that way.
Personally, I think that quality herbs are hard enough to get that the possibility of being given a bag good for anything but compost is remote.

Is #97 Floyd the Barber?
He must have been demoted by the time Goober became keeper of the golden door of fellowship.
Probably posted something contrary to sanctioned doctrine.

Ever see Drugstore Cowboy?
William S. Burroughs as a junky priest. Did a good job, too.

There is a group of inner circle members (The Aged Core) – 4 men and 1 woman = since 2009 when we started things off.

For our gatherings, another 6-8 of the group usually attends – with another 3-4 brand new people who are referred by current members. We use an older PayPal account where we deposit monies for absinthe orders – and have also purchased ourselves a fountain (4 spigot), a few dozen proper glasses, spoons, membership cards. I create the playlists and use my son’s DJ equipment for entertainment. Members will bring over snacks and other soft-drinks they prefer. The core group plans the events, analyzes the account, collects the monies, places orders etc. We have no formal “dues” to mention – just a running cash flow to cover the hooch and broken glasses (which is frequent).

I can tell you one thing – it’s much harder to attract women (than men) to something like this - - - but it’s all-good and my wife’s a sport about it all. We’ve scared away a few people over the years – and have seen MANY people drink too much/too fast and go awry. We warn everybody about the drunk that can creep up quickly if not careful – but the core keeps an eye on everything and controls the fountain – this helps.

We also have a major yearly event over Labor Day weekend - coupled with a regional music festival. Many of my long-distance friends travel into Chapel Hill . . . we have a huge private-party that Saturday night (Haute Verte): with a DJ, belly dancer, Gogo dancer (I actually built her a stage in my living room where she could dance) - - - it's grown into quite the spectacle !!!

Pics available upon request . . .

It's not much different from a Louchefest, except some people don't wear shoes, the communal money is cash in a shoebox, we have feats of strength, guest lecturers on bestiality, and, well, lots of other differences.

Don't forget the not-so-exotic dancer with multiple stages reclining in chairs around the living room.

And the unfortunate techno "DJing" at high volume for the said, dancer to stumble and writhe to.

People bring or send booze to louchfests and most of it is not big label.

A fine absinthe is the product of knowledge, craftsmanship, and talent. An exceptional absinthe is the product of those things plus obsession. Most absinthe is the product of marketing.

I only heard about it; had already left the building.
And whoever it was, it was I who ate your Cuban sandwich that weekend.
Sorry, I thought it was community property.
I did witness the homoerotic wrestling at a different fiesta; hopefully that's punishment enough.

I thought wrestling was part of the feats of strength.

Homoerotic wrestling and wrestling to keep down the KoS (done at gunpoint, I believe) are two different things. Although it is possible that either may make a weaker man stiff, only one requires true strength.

One of our Aged Core elders - absolutely gone - canned whipped cream hijinks ensuing:

We bust a lot of balls - deservedly so - but have some great fun all around.

August 30th is our target date this year for the bigger event - it will be off site as we've outgrown my house at this point.
