(Note I'm not going to ask if absinthe gets me high and I read the FAQ)

I have been searching for something new to try and recently read a Maxim where they were talking about Absinthe. I was about to buy the Pernod they highly recommended when I did a little more research and came across this forum. It changed my mind so I bought the Emile 68 which everyone seems to recommend. I can't wait for it to come in, I hope it's good as everyone says it is.

Anyways, I was just a little curious about that movie "From Hell." What exactly did he put on the sugar cube with the droplet? I assume it's just some Hollywood thing to make it look cool right?

I believe it was supposed to be Laudanum.

Yepper. That's what it says on the label.

Hey, what could make cooking absinthe with fire more cool? Throw on some opium!!

If you were inclined to ruin good absinthe, it would definitely add to the experience, but not in such a small dose as they show in the movie. Maybe a few teaspoons would. It might actually taste okay though, as laudanum has a slight licorice taste to it. Or so I've heard.

Since he was in an Opium Den, if I'm not mistaken, it's not that strange that he would use Laudanum. Cheaper than pure Opium but even riskier, I suppose.

Congradulations on your order of Un Emile, but please don't emulate the preparation method from the film "From Hell."

What you see in this film (and in Moulin Rouge I may add) was done because it looks cool on film but is not historically accurate, nor does it create an appealing drink.

Drip ice-water over a sugar cube until you've disolved the cube and added 3-5 parts water, according to taste.

Welcome!!!

Remember, the film was shot in Czech, home of the infamous Hill's (the BLUE one!), and I wouldn't be surprised if ole Radomil Hill (of the ancestral Czech "Hill" family wacko.gif)made a hefty contribution to the producer, in order to have Mr. Depp light up his laudanum drenched sugar cube.

It's certainly incongruous with a fine absinthe like Emile!

Cheers!!! absintheglass2.gif

Although I believe Sapin has won my heart, I will admit that you just can't go wrong with Emile 68! I am going to save the rest of my bottle for Spring when the lilacs are in bloom! Ahh.

Aye, Sapin is my favorite when it comes to the Un Emiles, but Fou and WF are also great.

I just finished this last night. Still a few finishing touches I'd like to tidy up, but maybe it will help.
