So ... I was bored at 3am the other day and since Blockbuster was closed and I have a very small and well viewed movie selection myself, I delved into my roommates movies and found XxX in there which I haven't seen and thought it might be good for a laugh or two.

One of the first scene's in the movie takes you to the "bad guys" club in Prague and concludes the scene with the main villain lighting a glass of bright green (looks exactly like Czech strong) on fire.

While the rest of the movie was only worth watching for the digital stunts, if you are in to that sort of thing, I was impressed at how right on they got this small detail for an "un-artistic" action movie. Not only didn't they show the Czech flame method for the overly vibrant colored swill, but they had only the BAD GUYS drinking it! tongue.gif

Sad when XxX can get their facts right and a movie like Moulin Rouge, which was critically respected for the most part, screwed the details up so bad :(
Hiram
I'm not really understanding your point here. How is flaming wrong in Moulin Rouge but "right on" in the porno?

P.S. Most of us watch porno to masturbate to, rather than for laughs. You should try it; it's pretty fun.
Deluge
Hiram: I assume that he meant XXX or Triple X the bad action flick! harhar.gif

Way to go Hiram! That's one bit of ignorance you can be proud of.

Wish I could say the same. That movie... poop.gif

WTF? I wan't to know how a flaming glass of green stuff is getting it right?

Well, Czechsinth is already wrong, in and of itself, so if the Czech flaming ritual is performed "correctly" in XXX, then I guess that's kind of like 2 wrongs making a right...sort of...maybe... blink.gif

I recently watched 2 movies that used absinthe as sub-themes, both of which were mentioned in Absinthe A Myth Always Green: Deceiver and Murder By Numbers. Both movies portray the ritual rather well (no flames, at least) but both contribute to what I call "Green Fairy madness." In Murder By Numbers a character says that thujone had the same effect as THC. (But then, no thanks to Barnaby Conrad, that passed as conventional wisdom.) But the worse offender was Deceiver in which Michael Rooker's character describes an artist who flays himself while being "high" on absinthe.

Has anyone seen The Last Samurai? Absinthe A Myth Always Green said that had an absinthe reference.

Here's my take...

Moulin Rouge is set in fin de siecle France (I think so anyways, I've never actually seen it) where the flaming ritual has never existed.

XXX is set in modern Prague where flaming crappy absinth seems to be acceptable.

Since both movies use the flaming ritual, XXX would be the more accurate one in its portrayal.
MarKoPoLo
That would be my take on it as well.

I should have been tipped off by the mention of a plot of any kind.

Perhaps if W.Farrel had cited the reference a little less vaguely I may have caught on. I do remember seeing trailers for xXx and thinking it would be well worth passing up. Maybe it was the inverted XxX instead of xXx that threw me.

Thank you LS for that perspective. It's amazing what a little communication skill can clear up.

Wow, I just totally laughed Mt. Dew out my nose at Hiram's post and the subsequent notion of absinthe in a porn flick..

"Oh, Professor Bootylayer (pr0n take on Baudelaire, natch) - I've been such a naughty french schoolgirl, I didn't complete my lesson!"

boobs.gif

"Perhaps you should be taught a REAL lesson.."

dildollpink.gif

*lighting a sugarcube 'aflame with the stub of his Malboro Light, Bootylayer raises a glass of glowing green liquid to his lips, chugs it back and tosses the glass into the fire dramatically.

*commence ravaging & gettin' bizzay*

That's AWESOME!!!

Has anything out of Hollywood besides the HBO series "Carnival" really "got it right?"

Morrigan:

I'd bet my last drop of my best HG that you were around (in a former life of course!) during the fin de siecle...

Your take on absinthe and porn would have made that prolific, English underground Victorian pornographer, Anonymous, smile.
LaMuseVerte
Carnivale was great: never once did they mention hallucinations or any other crap like that - they assumed that it aided Lodz (I think that's his name), "see" things other people couldn't, but it didn't insult the one watching it by describing how. If however, you went on the official HBO forums, you'd have a bunch of pseudo-self proclaimed "scholars" lecturing younglins on how Absinthe is a drug and makes you go wacko. (At least that aspect of the show was decent, Lodz was the only one I could tolerate).

About the porno - I think I saw it. The name isn't in English, and it begins in a bar, right? That's pretty much all I can say about it since pornos get pretty much the same eventually - but it wasn't hard core right? (I think it was softcore... at least the one I'm thinking of: regardless I agree with what Hiram said since pornos are dumb, funny, and censored2.gif). tongue.gif
Morrigan
Muse, that particular porno exists only in my head (god, I hope so at least.) I do so love to mock bad 70's porn.
MrGreenGenes
Is there such a thing as good porn of any era?
LaMuseVerte
Young Dumb and Full of ***... the entire series. (Someone gave me the first one as a gift for my birthday, somehow all my friends thought that was funny and they all began downloading them and burning them for me).

Indeed. However, I should add that I have seen a Czech porno featuring Absinthe... I'll try to find the name. evill.gif

Andrew Blake; although unfortunately very dated to the 80's.

It was arty, shot on film and had high production values. I heard a rumor that Blake had died, but since I don't really follow the adult entertainment industry any more, I'm not sure.

Also, Butt Slammers #6 was awesome.

Oh, and Party Dolls A-Go-Go is hilarious; some of the best lines ever: "Wow, she's saying some really profound stuff. I'll bet she's read The Hobbit." "Make me scream like a scalded puppy!" "Somebody call June Allison, and wrap me in Depends!"
Conju
No no no no, andrew blake is still alive and kicking, I've seen some of his modern work, and it is gooooooooood! Quality is a top issue, even with his hardcore porn. He knows how to do porn!

yeah? Well it was illegal in those days. Ron Jeremy almost got thrown in jail for making it.

Also the flaming absinthe scene from XXX was also in the Rammstein video for that movie, Ein heisses Schrrrrrei *Bang* Bang* FEUER FRRRREI! FEUER FREI!

Really? That's good to know. I liked his stuff a lot.
I wonder if he ever used absinthe in any of his movies. <--- Back on topic.
Absomphe
Paul Thomas's stuff...

And also the "Candy" series, directed by Gail...What was Her Name...

Really classy production values!
faygo
Oh I also saw Absinthe in the following movies:
Uncle Buck
The Goonies
Bio Dome
Ernest Goes to Camp
& Ernest Pays For Sex
LaMuseVerte
Um... Absinthe was in the goonies? To think I let my baby sister watch that.

For me it's really all about the hentai. Nothing's better than anime porn.

Some of my favs

La Blue Girl series
Wordsworth series
Overfiend series
Twin Angels
Cool Devices series (some really twisted shit, some of them make you fell like a bad person after watching, but some are really good)

There are so many more but those are all I can remember.

Regular porn I usually stick to vivid
Heather Hunter
Kobe Tai
Jenteal
Jenna

And nothing beats those on a 52" widescreen
Absomphe
"For me it's really all about the hentai. Nothing's better than anime porn."

Does that mean you're actually nothing more than a 'Toon?

That explains a lot!

LaMuseVerte
Um... Verbal I know you must have made a mistake. What about Bible Black? I should think it was much better than Twin Angels. :)

Jenna? Jenna Haze? Oh... very good, especually with Daisy Dukes.

Wordsworth was great.
Absomphe
Let's not forget Jenna Jamieson...

I know Howard doesn't!
verbal_kraze
I haven't seen Bible Black yet I'll have to look for that one. I may have it in my library. I got 150 hentai movies off ebay a while back. They're compressed onto 15 cd's so the quality isn't the greatest, but it looks fine on a computer screen.
Damn I love hentai.
Conju
Bible black is disgusting.

Pink Pineapple does good Hentai.

I'm a neon genesis freak, too.
MrGreenGenes
Maybe a more interesting question is what makes good porn good?

The production values? Something resembling a plot? Lack of anything resembling a plot? The size of the performers' body parts? That it has your specific interest in it?

Conju
In live stuff It's a matter of filters, background quality, timing (yes that's important), positions, camera angles, makeup, and of course, The looks of our stars.

In anime, its all on the illustration skill and imagination of the artist(s) who present the piece.
LaMuseVerte
Heh how is Bible Black disgusting?

For me... the best ones are the clearest ones: I don't like grainy stuff. I also don't like when they use different fader colors. I typically like something vintage-set, but not vintage-made (clear in quality, nice closeups, yet 19th century clothing). The latter changes with the me though. I like anything so long as you see what the pornstars wear with clothing, from all angles, in a public place first... then my ideal film would get hardcore. Nothing faked (no faked pleasure or pain). Makeup is fine (more exotic, the better).

QUOTE

Hell yeah. Not too cartoonish for me... hair needs to be well drawn, everything identified. Sounds. The works. And most of all, bodily liquids must stay on the body for more than 10 seconds (which is rare in Hentai). Eyes have to be bright, beautiful, and well drawn - eyes and hair are the most important thing (along with bums).

The use of drugs and alcohol must be real, so too must be the way they affect the individual: no faked sleeping.

In bondage films? No faked pain.
Morrigan
I cannot BELIEVE that our own Head P. is missing this thread.

Head??!... where for art thou?..
Absomphe
I, like many other people have a theory...

Well, not really, but I kinda miss ole Master Alchemist.

I wonder if Head and/or Kallisti, really are suffocating in Cros's trunk...

Nah.......
Conju
I only saw one bible black and it was more snuffish than what I'm interested in. There is another one that I can think of... twin sisters or something like that.. it's one where these two young virgins get raped by this big businessman. I thought that was pretty good. I'm actually looking to restock my collection...one of these days....

I heart hentai.
munski
It is absolutely amazing how Sir Hiram can turn a congenial conversation about Absinthe in film into an intellectual dissertation about the virtues of Porn. Well done!

Absinthe was in Bram Stoker's Dracula= or was it Ham Pokers Blackula?
Jack Batemaster
He's in Crosby's trunk.

>Has anyone seen The Last Samurai? Absinthe A Myth Always Green said that had an absinthe reference.

the producers of this movie contacted LDF for antique glassware, bottles and a pernod fils label to be used in the movie (plus a bottle of un émile for the crew). obviously, somewhere down the line it was decided that it was not 'american enough' to see an ex-civil war hero sipping absinthes from a swirl glass, and what you got was tom cruise slamming whiskey.
the book was published before the release of the movie with insider information that eventually turned out not to have taken place.

blink.gif Oh that's not as snuffish, in fact, that's light compared to bible black. harhar.gif

Peter: Damn idiots. That Tom Cruise is becoming stranger and stranger. Did they end up buying the products they contracted from LDF? *Shrugs* oh well... I doubt they could have abused it as badly as the "hallucination" flicks, too bad. Perfect scene would have been where he was speaking with the Japanese fellows at that table... blah.

And apologies, I typed not knowing you had posted :)
Conju
Well then put up or shut up. I would like to see more of this "bible black". Let me know what you can do if you got some.

2100!
Lord Stanley
Porno cartoons? Whatever floats your boat I guess.
Most porn stars look cartoonish enough already.

I read that the worst thing about to happen to porn is DVD's in high-def. Then, we'll get to see what a lot of the performers REALLY look like. Crystal clear images on gigantic HDTV's. Could be tough to hide some previously obscured appearance flaws.

I saw The Last Samurai and was racking my brain trying to remember an absinthe reference. That's a great story.
MarKoPoLo
DVD's eh? Well thats slightly disturbing. All in all Id have to say amateur is the way to go. None of that structured stuff. Plots are always half hearted, imposible to believe and never consistent. So yeah I still would have to stick with amateur and such.

4 Pages already, well I had to reply to this. Hiram, please don't try and claim the the misunderstanding was a lack of communication on my end when it was obviously misread by you. I'm not sure how many porno films you have been watching with digitalized stunts but ...

You get the point. That was pretty cheap trying to push your blunder on me because I'm one of the "new guys" around here tongue.gif
