HOLY LIVING FUCK.

Zhang Yimou is a deity.

They made a Pink Floyd show look like a couple of sock puppets.

You all better start learning how to speak Chinese…

It's just amazing what can be done when you threaten, censor, exile, imprison, beat and murder enough people -- now that's entertainment!
Donnie Darko
It's more complicated than that though. When it comes to threatening, censoring, exiling, imprisoning, beating and murdering people, North Korea makes China look like The Netherlands, but you don't see North Korea doing anything so impressive. It's a two steps forward/1.8 steps back kind of thing. The fact that they picked Yimou to direct the opening ceremony was pretty impressive, given that he was a victim of those threats and censorship for so long over his art in the past. They've got a lot of work to do, but this is a step forward. Hopefully this plus all the athletes embarrassing them by wearing necessary breathing masks (my friend Jenn is Chinese and can't visit her family there anymore due to Beijing aggravating her asthma so horribly) will make them act a bit more like a citizen of the world and less like a paranoid stalker ex-girlfriend.

According to Joss Whedon's Firefly, our future language will be a mixture of English and Japanese.

The reaction of those organising London 2012 was probably less subdued.

The poet Charles Potts writes that we will surrender to the Chinese in Spanish.
Donnie Darko
Ha. Honestly the Chinese will probably all just learn how to speak English, and that's how they'll dominate the world.

I suspect they have all been put on suicide watch.

No, it's not more complicated unless you want to include the role of various multinatinals in financing and profiting from the spectacle. Yes, North Korea is far worse as is Burma and Sudan (as was China under Mao), all regimes that are supported by the current Chinese government. But how does that make the Chinese government's repression any less repugnant? Because they put on a good show? You say this is a case of two-steps forward, 1.8 steps back but virtually every independent human rights group has reported that the situation in China has worsened, not partially improved, because of the games. Hu Jia (now in prison), Teng Biao and other activists wrote an open letter a year ago in which they detailed some of the crimes committed by the government for the games, including torture and murder. They wrote "When you come to the Olympic Games in Beijing..you may not know that the flowers, smiles, harmony and prosperity are built on a base of grievances, tears, imprisonment, torture and blood."

The chinese will defeat themselves in the long run. Most all rivers and streams are polluted to the point fish can no longer survive in them.Their staple foods such as veggies and the like are watered from polluted sources hence everything they raise to eat is not healthy. And of course we all have seen the terrible air quality which is far worse than any city here however LA is getting close to being as bad. They have been condeming private homes and property to make way for more industrial operations and people are thrown out to the streets to survive. If you are injured on the job too bad and if you miss work due to injury or illness you are fired. Of course no free speech or free thinking is allowed one could go on and on about this. But I don't think for a minute the chinese will survive what they have created for very long.

If the Chinese start to run out of primary agricultural and other essential resources, my wild guess is, they'll just go find what they need elsewhere in the world.

Assuming there's nothing wrong with a bit of correctional beating, as long as it leads to perfection. Every day we can enjoy the fruits of such policy, as for example: Wonderful firework displays, affordable consumer electronics, night shops, cheap flip-flops and above all, top athletes, after all, according to the media, it seems that the whole damn world agreed upon these games taking place down there.

So why make any complaint or ask further tedious questions or bother about
threatening, censoring, exiling, imprisoning, beating, murdering innocent people, dubious politics, and issues about human rights?

You've enjoyed the show, that's all that matters in the end, now isn't it?

Fuck this but it beats me how they or we could ever let it take place in a country like that…

You make it sound like China is the only country in the world whose shit stinks.

It reminds me of the exchange in The Godfather between Michael and Kay:

Michael: My father's no different than any other powerful man (Kay laughs), any man who's responsible for other people. Like a senator or a president.
Kay: You know how naive you sound?
Michael: Why?
Kay: Senators and presidents don't have men killed.
Michael: Oh, who's being naive, Kay?

The issue here seems to be the Olympic Games in Beijing, China…

But whenever an event takes place in a country with a questionable reputation a comparable policy and circumstances of similar wrongfulness critics will raise their voices.

Shit stinks, no matter what country it's from.

I get it.

My point is, China isn't alone.

When you write, "why make any complaint or ask further tedious questions or bother about
threatening, censoring, exiling, imprisoning, beating, murdering innocent people, dubious politics, and issues about human rights?", you could easily be talking about my home country's foreign policy over the past several years. We're on the same page.

I'm glad to hear we are.

The hoi polloi, is supposed to make the difference and also should more often unite and make things really happen.

I believe it was actually English and Mandarin. Thanks to gorram FoxfuckingTV, we'll never get to see how it would actually work out…
