Jay
Greetings all around. My name is Jay, and I've been lurking in the virtual shadows of this site and the Wormwood Society site off and on for a couple of years, and last month I decided to finally have a taste of absinthe and come in from out of the cold. So far, I've tried Lucid, Obsello, La Charlotte, Pacifique and Walton Waters -- the quality level went from good to great in that order, with the exception of La Charlotte (which had a below average taste and an absolutely horrible aftertaste). I hope to get a bottle of Meadow of Love, Marteau, and Leopold in the near future.

So I heard you all are really gentle folk who are happy to have the second-best absinthe site on the intrawebs -- is that true?
Absomphe
I hear you enjoy sleeping with the fishes, and keeping one eye open…is that true? noztrilla.gif

I'm sure the infamous Absomphe would not deny the wisdom of a little preemptive sarcasm here at the FV. abs-cheers.gif
Absomphe
Shirley, you jest.

We're so serious here, we don't even have an emotion to alert us of sarcasm.
Diamondgirl
Heya!

I'm new too, and they haven't done anything horrible to me yet.

At least, I haven't noticed. Maybe they have and I am too n00b to figure it out. biggrin.gif
rjordan
No, not yet.

And what do you mean J, "second-best absinthe site"? Ha! No wait, that doesn't deserve a Ha! That deserves a poop.gif . This is the firstest (of it's kind) and bestest absinthe site ever. Don't you forget that.

That's true, but Der Cros hasn't allowed any n00bs into the best part of the Lounge where he shows off his gay porn collection in at least a couple years. So most people (myself included) aren't able to appreciate the brilliance of the Lounge.
Jay
D_P, if you start talking about there being Luscious Oily Lesbians, I…. well, I might have to hack my way into the Lounge.

RJordan, what was it that I wasn't supposed to forget. My sh-sh-short term memory ain't so good since I started drinking the green fairy-devil and tripping balls….

Am I supposed to be surprised by this, darling? I knew pretty well what I was signing up for. :)

I envy your experience with nicer absinthes. I need to get hold of something better than Lucid, though it may spoil me forever.

I hate to ask the obvious , but theoretically , who are you referring to as first?
Grim
It honestly doesn't matter.

The forums are populated enough at this point by sooooo many vested interests, I'd suggest - quite simply - that you try to be comfortable enough with your own tastes to balance your experience with your gut-instinct, atleast until your appreciation for absinthe earnestly expands.

Nearly everything that gets lauded, likely sucks, and everything that sucks probably sucks quite hard. Cheers.

"There is a level of cowardice lower than that of the conformist: the fashionable non-conformist."

I hope it doesn't apply in your case, Grim.

Grim
Well, obviously I don't think it does… but I'll leave it to you to show me where I've erred, Doctor.

Insulting me isn't the best way to troll. Insulting Eric or Grim works a lot better.
Tibro
Mightn't it be interesting if, for scientific reasons, Jay sought to create a control group by insulting long-standing members at whichever other forum he feels to be superior to here. If there are any long-standing members there, I mean.

Probably so…

I should've, with a less captious emphasis, said: be leery of any absinthe that receives clusters of praise within the absinthe forums; there's nearly no way to assure that a seemingly popular absinthe marque or absinthe sample (new or old) will agree with you, especially where a (typcial) cadre of members wish to temporarily elevate it. The lesson over the years is that it will likely find its proper rank once all the dicks go soft.

I'm so glad Grim has such a high opinion of our opinions.
I praised the Vieux Carre and it got me an instant "aren't you selling them herbs ?"
I guess if they use my herbs that automatically makes my opinion suspect .
Remember Peter selling my spoons and me insulting him at every turn until he dropped them ?
I'd mention the other friends I've kicked in the balls but I hate to dredge it up ,
just stick around and see the show , it repeats itself regularly .
Delaware Phoenix
Vieux Carre
Leopold Brothers .
Those are the 3 best absinthes on the market today , not necessarily in that order .
I only sell herbs to 2 of them so I put Leopold on the bottom of the list.
Donnie Darko
Grim has a point that there are so many vested interests here these days that the lines have been completely blurred, so it hardly matters anymore. I reflect with a tear upon the good ol days of yore when accusations of shilling and of disingenuous behavior on the part of the enemy to boost their own products were thrown about with abandon by HG cowboys. Now we're all both the good guys and the bad guys, which means that hopefully such silly oversimplifications will be done away with entirely.

All that matters is good absinthe, and there seems to be enough of it on both sides of the pond now to result in some sort of equilibrium. Anybody that makes a good absinthe and puts obvious effort and care into their product has my stamp of approval, as long as they are honest. If Kirk makes some herbs that end up in a great absinthe, then good for him, he helped make something great and deserves to be given money for it. The same goes for Oxy, Peter, Ted and whoever else can do it.
Phoenix
I'd like to think that there's still room in the absinthe world for throwing around accusations and insults. For example, look at brands like Absinthe Supreme.

A vendor posts at the WS about how great it is and proceeds to provide a link to his site where you can buy it. Then some rep from Supreme shows up and gives the same worn out story about how they have to promote chop.gif, but wish they didn't. He comes back a day or two later and proudly states that he's updated his website's FAQ page. What was this update? He added a part insulting people who like absinthe that don't appreciate chop.gif hyping. That was all.

If you need an enemy, you need not look any further then people/brands like that.
Donnie Darko
Those bastards always were the enemy and always will be. Le Tourment Vert anyone?

Kidding, of course. I just said "second-best" so I could enjoy having all the lords of Sarc (as in, asm) imagine whatever they felt would be the worst and respond appropriately. All in good, evil, fun.

Did you just paint me into a corner where I have to respond in Beavisese and hyper-stutter, "F-f-fire! Fire!"?

Yes, I believe you did.

no-czechs3.gif

To respond in some seriousness (yes, I'm breaking the fifth wall), I've enjoyed reading through Fee Verte posts off and on since 2006, and appreciate the treasure chest of knowledge contained therein. I have also lurked at the Wormwood Society for just as long, and recently joined there as well. Yes, I'm well aware of the bitterness that exists between some of the frequenters of each site, and no, I have no interest in hearing more about that or entangling myself in that to any degree.

If my playfully snarky comments in this thread seem premature, it's only because I know how some of the more active members roll at the FV. I assure you it's all in jest.

Anyway, thanks to all for the entertaining welcome, and I'll see you around in some other threads!

And that's even when they're all sincere.

I still remember the Brut d'Alambic #1 - Oliver Matter used fenchone-rich wild fennel in that and I can *really* not stand that. It became my favourite blanche (save for the idiosyncratic "Wormwood") only after Matter switched to using Flo fennel for later batches, but I still have an expensive bottle that's only mildly palatable to me after three years of aging (after diluting to 60°).

The point is: other people really like that bottle. But I don't, while I really do like the more recent batches.

Some people like the Alandia Epoque, I really don't like its flat and overly sweet anise profile.

Some people like the cinnamon in the Montmartre, I absolutely detest it (another almost full bottle of a product that's quite well made but doesn't agree with me).

Examples galore.

You have misidentified the best and most authoritative absinthe hangout-- it is, of course, The Cocktail Lounge. When it's labeled 'The Traditional,' you know it's authentic.

absinthist
Early 90's if at all. Oh, and welcome Jay!
Jay
Thank ya kindly, absinthist. I feel like I know you already, having read some of your reviews, but then again, I haven't found your review of Red Bull and vodka -- where are you hiding that gem?
Tibro
He's waiting for the sample provider to disclose which vodka it was.
absinthist
Ha!

Seriously, I do not consider it drinkable, as almost every vodka-based cocktail. Lest we forget the concoction of ethanol and taurine with caffeine can be detrimental to the health of a drinker. The fact that you feel alright after several glasses of Red Bull with vodka, does not mean you will not be dying in the morning or you, in fact, won't die from respiratory and cardiovascular system failure (such cases were being reported). It is called "antagonism of poisons".
dakini_painter
Kirk grows good herbs. I use them in my absinthes as I can, the MoL especially.

I think there's a difference between honest support and appreciation for something and outright promotion. If you know Kirk, you know which one of those he does.

If you look over the absinthes that have been produced and appreciated on the forums since mid-2006 you'll see what Grim talks about. Time was when Ike and Duplais (when there was one) were "it". What product will be seen to be "it" a year from now? Who knows?

But maybe there aren't any plateaus to be climbed, but differences of emphasis and desire.

Aside: I know several bars where they have one brand of vodka, it's used to clean things, not for drinking. evill.gif
Kirk
We were right in 2006 about what was "it" and we are right now , things change.
Grim's statement could just as well be documenting the rapid assent of absinthe qualities.
Jay
So do you all believe in going back and modifying older reviews to reflect the fact that they have fallen in your estimation in comparison to some newer absinthes? That seems like a tedious (and perhaps unnecessarily revisionist) exercise, but I've noticed that some people have noted doing that on the WS reviews.
