Hi everyone,

I'm a new absintheur from Turkey, finally introduced with absinthe and became a big fan of it!

I was always tempted by the myth built around this famous drink but did not have the opportunity to try and more importantly did not want to spoil my first impression by a low quality brand.
Finally a few months ago, I decided I should get a bottle while I was in the UK, started my research, and found out this great website FeeVerte! Did my homework well and prepared a list of all the good ones, just to find out that I did not know where to look in London then, and ended up nothing better than a bottle of Pernod. dry.gif

I have to insert a note here, as some of you probably know we have a similar Turkish drink called "Raki" (which is basically the same thing as the Greek "Ouzo") distilled with anise alone, slightly sweetened and generally around 45% alc. It is usually diluted with 1:1 water, clear in color, has a thick white louche. So absinthe is not a completely new experience from my perspective.

So having that said, the Pernod was a little bit of frustration for me, cause it was not very different from raki; with a slight bitterness and a minor hint of complexity of additional herbs. But later on, when a friend who learned about my interest in absinthe, brought me bottle of Tabu I found out that absinthe can differ quite much from brand to brand; Tabu was more like it; it was much complex with an aroma composed of several herbs (most I cannot identify unsure.gif ) of very sweet scent, yet had a strong bitterness too. I liked it! Yet from the reviews here I could see that it was not one of the more respected brands, and I had to investigate for the premium brands..

So after quite a hassle I managed to get a bottle of Doubs Mystique via one of my friends in UK! And well, you can imagine my expectations were quite high! But.. (I cannot believe that I'm saying this right now) but at first try I did not like it at all!! There was a distinctive scent that was very strange to me; the Pontarlier wormwood as I read from the reviews here later. But I opened the bottle to take a sniff from time to time just to familiarize with the scent. And after a couple of weeks I gave it a second try.. And I began to like it… And the third time I tried it, I adored it!!! I found out that I like it more with a cube or half of sugar, and at a slightly stronger ratio; 1:2,5 may be.. It is very smooth, yet with a lot of aroma! I can now see the difference!

The down side is, now I cannot enjoy any other absinthe but Doubs only!! biggrin.gif The other brands I have now taste so artificial! Later on I bought a bottle of Lucid based on the good reviews here, but still it lacks the finely balanced complexity of Doubs Mystique in my opinion, and the dominance of anise in Lucid is not very pleasant for me, for the reason I stated previously.

As a last word, I want to have some advice from you experienced absintheurs; I will pay a visit to London again and I'm thinking of adding another bottle to my collection, but something premium.. What would you recommend for this one? (Knowing that I liked the Doubs Mystique a lot, and I DON'T want something anise dominated.)
I'm thinking of Jade PF 1901.. (As Doubs is a modern absinthe, I would rather like to try a traditional old receipt like PF 1901 this time) I have learned Jade is available in Soho Wine Supp. What do you say??

Go for the PF 1901.

It lacks the assertively aromatic wormwood bitterness of the Doubs, but it has a very nice anise and fennel interplay, and the fuller louche and mouth feel appropriate to a Belle Epoque absinthe clone.

Hmmm.. What you say does not sound so much appealing to me though.. That I think; "the assertively aromatic wormwood bitterness" is what I like in Doubs.
After trying Lucid I'm doubtful that I'll like anything dominant in anise no matter how well it is.
Can you recommend an absinthe similar to Doubs?

Welcome.

The Vieux Pontarlier is very good as is the Jade Edouard. You might like the 1797 as it has a very strong wormwood presence.

for sure…. Colorado is Heaven for ski in winter and Heaven for mountain biking in the other seasons….. come by and we will drink something together……. wacko.gif (I used to ski until I broke my leg…..)

I heard that in Copper Mountain (a city in the mountains) has a nice absinthe bar Green Fairy Bar it would be nice to land there sometime with someone who also likes absinthe…

Hi Burcak!

Already being familiar with raki (or Ouzo or arak) definitely does provide an interesting perspective. At least you'll have no trouble picking out the anise and alcohol base!

Doubs Mystique is great, if you like it, I think you'd actually enjoy a good many absinthes that are out there. The PF1901 is a great place to continue, as is Blanchette. My personal favorite Jade though is definitely Verte Suisse VS 1889.

A friend of mine gave me a bottle of Tekirdag gold rakisi. I understand it has several other herbs in it besides green anise and made with a raisin base. I enjoyed it so much that I tore through it pretty fast, when I tried to replace it I read that the guy who made it was gone and that the company was now owned by the government and they could not figure out how to make it. This is possibly beside the point though because the distributer will not ship to the US. Know how I can get a case?

Tekirdag is my recent favorite too!! Although I did not try the "Gold" version yet, I will soon.. If you find "Green Label EFE" that's a very good brand too! Well as much as I know, the company producing Tekirdag was always owned by the government .. It still is one of the most requested raki brands.

Yes it has the raisin base you're right, but I'm doubtful about the other herbs. That's not because I'm an expert or anything but I'm saying this from what I read on the bottle tongue.gif the process and ingredients are clearly decribed, nothing mentioned other than distillate base (called as suma in Turkish), anise and sugar.
(By the way is "raisin" word used for dried grapes? Cause the distinctive point of these brands are their base is made from fresh grapes unlike most other brands)

I'm pretty sure there must be some neighborhood in your city where mostly Turkish people is gathered. I would check some of the small stores there wink.gif
Or if you tell me where you are in US, I can try to give you some ideas..

A raisin is a dried grape, yes. I believe you are speaking of the Tekirdag raki, my understanding is that the Tekirdag rakisi gold was a different product all together.

I'll tell the story as much as I know then..

Until a few years ago, raki production was controlled by government and different distillaries produced raki under only one single brand that is "Yeni Raki". But then this law was changed and now it is free to produce raki by private companies.. Many different raki brands emerged after that..

Tekirdag is a city in Turkey; and at the times when there was only Yeni Raki, Tekirdag distillary was famous and although the bottles were branded all the same, people tried to locate the Tekirdag products by the code number on the bottles! After the legal change the product of this distillary is seperated from Yeni Raki brand and sold as a new brand "Tekirdag"

Tekirdag brand has three different editions, all are produced from fresh grapes. Gold is the ultimate version!
