Full Version: Does Absinthe Cause Madness?
The Fée Verte Absinthe Forum - The Oldest, Largest, Most Authoritative Absinthe Forum. > Absinthe & Absinthiana > General Absinthe Discussion
Provenance
Not hallucinations or some other druggie silliness but a far more subtle yet deeper disruption of mental faculties.
Kirk
I lost a sense of responsibility I once had, I don't care about deadlines much, I used to be as dependable as the sunrise. It may not be the absinthe but it went hand in hand, I didn't drink before.
sbmac
I've experienced some of those issues myself in the past couple years, but suspect it was due to simply needing a bit of reinvention, and perhaps taking a minor break after 22 years of the same job (which I did, and it helped).

A refreshed old tattoo and making a tacky green guitar for myself worked wonders. Thank God it wasn't the booze.

Probably not any more than a red sports car when you turn forty. And yet, I can't deny that a thought similar to yours passed through my mind a month or two ago.

Off the cuff, it seems to me that absinthe is a luxury akin to a work of art, and the very best absinthe represents the pinnacle of that luxury. After having experienced such a rare marvel in one aspect of life, it's difficult to be happy with other aspects of life in which such great heights have not yet been attained. That reality may indeed lead to a certain kind of mental disruption.
Tibro
I may have come to absinthe seeking relief from or medication of the deeper disruption of my mental faculties. I've tried several other methods and substances. The underlying state has remained consistent throughout, I believe.

Anybody who was reading this Forum a few years ago would have had no trouble believing we were all fucking crazy… forget a "subtle yet deeper disruption of mental faculties."
Kirk
That's a fact.
Absomphe
Indeed.

Yet Tisserand made clear that absinthe was the opposite of a luxury good, it was a basic staple of the working class.

If that statement was only true in the past then all of us have gone quite wrong.
Kirk
You all seem perfectly sane to me now. leglamp.gif
Père Ubu
The red sports car from when I turned 40, has gone on to a third life as a race car, so that insanity has sadly left me.
Ammo and gun prices gave gone to stupid, so that insanity is toast.
I have neither the time or patience to homebrew (and I find even the best store bought to not be very drinkable).

Absinthe is the only insane thing I have now. Without it, I'd go completely fucking nuts.
Kirk
I'm embarrassed to say how much of the stuff I drink, or have drunk, but I'm a drunk and I don't care for beer.

Right.

La reponse à ta question is très simple : bien sûr.
Père Ubu
Obviously.
sbmac
Père U, you were fuckin' nuts before you took your first sip of absinthe. Tell me I'm wrong.
Tibro
"I've been mad for fucking years, absolutely years, been
over the edge for yonks, been working me buns off for bands…"

"I've always been mad, I know I've been mad, like the
most of us…very hard to explain why you're mad, even
if you're not mad…"
Jack Batemaster
J'étais tout à fait normal avant de l'absinthe…
Jaded Prole
Sanity is a bore.

At least that's what I am told.
Père Ubu
If I had a mouse, and he hadn't got a house, I'd call him Gerald. He would be getting rather old, but he would be a good mouse.

Roger (Syd) Barret made sense to me. :)

If I had a bike
you could ride it if you like.

It would have a basket a bell that rings
and things to make it look good.

One Step Beyond…?
Greytail
I got really mad after drinking absinthe once. Course the fact that it was over my bottle being empty could have been the straw that broke the camel's back.
thegreenimp
Absinthe fills me with inertia
Greytail
Tough crowd.
Jaded Prole
My wife has a tendency to get mad when I drink a lot of absinthe.
G&C
Another good reason for not having one.
Tibro
Said his right hand to his left.
Jay
A wife or an absinthe?

Nevermind. Silly question.
Provenance
Particularly since the comment could refer to either.

Or both.

Absinthe madness by proxy
Jaded Prole
The secondaries can be bitter but they don't slow down my drinking.
Grim
Absinthe doesn't bring madness on, it keeps a door ever-open that you're expected to close between guests in your life.

<To a girl to the right at the bar.> "Have a seat…"
sbmac
I notice that after a glass, I am not as good at capturing/clobbering the multitude of gigantor camel-crickets in my basement. That makes me mad.
Greytail
That brought back a flood of childhood memories. We had a fruit cellar which I always had to visit to collect whatever potatoes, apples or onions were needed for supper that day. If the dark was not enough, coupled with the dank and musty odors, the fear of a giant cricket jumping on me usually had me dreading the inevitable command from my mother.

Thanks Scott. Nightmares for sure tonight.

My screen's shredded and the hinges broken.

Otherwise, a lovely metaphor.
thegreenimp
Absinthe, I don't care.
G&C
That makes me mad.
